Polyaniline/CeO2 nanocomposites as corrosion inhibitors for improving the corrosive performance of epoxy coating on carbon steel in 3.5% NaCl solution

Yanhua Lei,Zhichao Qiu,Ning Tan,Hailiang Du,Dongdong Li,Jingrong Liu,Tao Liu,Weiguo Zhang,Xueting Chang

Polyaniline/cerium dioxide (PANI/CeO 2 ) nanocomposite (NPs) was synthesized by in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of CeO 2 NPs. Various analytical facilities, i.e., powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), were utilized to characterize the synthesized CeO 2 and PANI/CeO 2 NPs. The coatings prepared from the synthesized PANI/CeO 2 NPs exhibited excellent corrosion resistance that was superior to epoxy coatings added with PANI in NaCl solution. The exceptional improvement of corrosion protection performance of the PANI/CeO 2 /epoxy coatings is associated with the synergetic protection of the enhancement of the protective barrier due to the role of CeO 2 NPs and PANI against the diffusion of aggressive ions (e.g., Cl − ) and the improvement of self-healing protection attributed to the redox behavior of PANI. Thus, the hybrid PANI/CeO 2 NPs are considered as the best route to enhance the protection performance of the epoxy coatings on carbon steel.

Efficient degradation of tetracycline via activation of peracetic acid (PAA) over MnFe2O4@CeO2: The role of cerium, performance, and degradation mechanism

Xian Li,Yuqing Yang,Qitao Guo,Daoyuan Xue,Shuai Tian,Guiqing Gao,Xinde Jiang,Zhanmeng Liu

The MnFe₂O₄@CeO₂/PAA system could achieve 97.3% TC within 30 min. • The ROS of CH₃C( O )OO• was dominated in TC degradation. • The doping of CeO 2 could improve the ion leaching rate and enhance catalytic performance. • Relatively better anti-interference capability of this system To addresses the problem of agglomeration and enhance the catalytic performance of MnFe 2 O 4 , the catalyst with MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles comparatively evenly dispersed and embedded on the CeO 2 nanosheets (MnFe 2 O 4 @CeO 2 ) was synthesized via a one-step low-temperature co-precipitation route. Then the prepared MnFe 2 O 4 @CeO 2 was employed to constitute PAA activation (MnFe 2 O 4 @CeO 2 /PAA) system for the TC degradation. The morphology, structure, and properties of MnFe 2 O 4 @CeO 2 have been explored and TC degradation experiments have been conducted. Under the optimized conditions, TC could achieve 97.3% degradation efficiency (reaction rate constant k = 0.1238 min −1 ) and 66.4% TOC removal within 30 min. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), including hydroxyl radical (•OH), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and acetylperoxyl radical (CH 3 C( O )OO•), were identified and involved in the TC degradation, while CH 3 C( O )OO• was verified to play the most important role. The introduction of CeO 2 could accelerate electron transfer and decrease the leaching concentration of Fe and Mn. In addition, few intermediates toxicity, relative strong anti-interference ability among various anions and multitudinous water matrixes, low leaching ions, great reusability, excellent degradation performance towards other organic pollutants exhibited the prospect potential application of this MnFe 2 O 4 @CeO 2 /PAA system. Overall, this study provides a referential significance of PAA activation system involved in the remediation of organic pollutants. Study on the efficiency and enhanced energy utilization in high-concentration SF6 degradation via DBD: Synergistic CeO2 catalysis and TiO2 photocatalysis

Runze Dong,Dakuo Liu,Pengfei Qu,Wenhao Li,Dong Fu

This study proposes a novel approach for synergistically degrading sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) combined with TiO₂/CeO₂ photocatalysis. By introducing UV-responsive TiO₂, the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst was significantly enhanced, thereby improving the overall degradation performance for SF 6 . Under the conditions of a Ti/Ce molar ratio of 0.05:0.95 and an input power of 60 W, a degradation efficiency (DRE) of 99.99% was achieved when degrading 2% SF₆. Compared with pure CeO 2 (with a DRE of 92.44%), the DRE has increased by 7.55%, and the selectivity of SO 2 in the product has also significantly improved, indicating that the doping of TiO 2 promotes the more complete degradation of SF 6 . Compared to using DBD alone, the DRE increased by 4.7 times, and the energy yield (EY) increased by 12.78 g/kWh. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the TiO₂/CeO₂ composite catalyst enhances the surface adsorption capacity for SF 6 molecules. Mechanistic analysis further revealed that the UV light generated by DBD excites TiO₂/CeO₂ to produce photogenerated electron-hole pairs, while the high-energy electrons in the plasma region effectively suppress carrier recombination. This study confirms the significant potential of the DBD-photocatalysis synergistic system for treating highly stable SF 6 .

Electrical conductivity of Y2O3-doped CeO2 based composite ceramics by spark plasma sintering: The effects of a second phase of CeAlO3

X.Y. Ping,B. Meng,W.K. Liang,Q. Zheng,C. Li

The Ce 0.85 Y 0.15 O 2-δ (YDC)-xmol% aluminum containing compound (x = 0, 10, 20 and 40) composite powders were prepared through mixing YDC with 0, 10, 20 and 40 mol% Al(NO 3 ) 3 (named as A0, A10, A20, A40), and then densified by spark plasma sintering at 1300 °C for 5 min. The main phase of YDC exists in all samples, while a second phase of CeAlO 3 forms for x ≥ 10 in the composite ceramics. The diffraction peak intensity of CeAlO 3 gradually augments with the increase of Al(NO 3 ) 3 addition amount. The average grain size of the composite ceramics reduces from 1.7 μm to 0.34 μm with the rise in Al(NO 3 ) 3 addition amount from 0 to 40%. The grain boundary (GB) electrical conductivity of A10 and A20 is lowered by 96% and 89% compared with that of YDC at 350 °C because the CeAlO 3 phase exists in the form of flakes and fine grains and hinders the oxygen ion conduction across the GB of samples. When CeAlO 3 grains grow up and uniformly distribute in the A40, the GB conductivity of A40 increases by 405% relative to that of pure YDC at 350 °C.

Effects of extrinsic defects originating from the interfacial reaction of CeO2-x-nickel silicate on catalytic performance in methane dry reforming

Dan Guo,Yao Lu,Yongzhe Ruan,Yifan Zhao,Yujun Zhao,Shengping Wang,Xinbin Ma

Dry reforming of methane is a promising process to convert two greenhouse gases into syngas. Calcinated nickel silicate nanotubes (C-NSNT) as well as CeO 2-x interface-confined and nickel silicate nanotubes (NSNT)-derived Ni catalysts, which are marked as λCeO 2-x -NSNT (λ = 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2.25), is prepared and evaluated in dry reforming of methane. Compared with C-NSNT, the λCeO 2-x -NSNT samples exhibit improved catalytic performance in dry reforming of methane, which is closely related to Ni-CeSiO 2-x interface along with extrinsic defects from the interfacial reaction between CeO 2 and NSNT during the reduction process. Extrinsic defects can generate oxygen vacancies that can be accompanied by Ce 3+ species. The enhancement of catalytic activity is ascribed to confined effects of extrinsic defects at contact interface of Ni-CeSiO 2-x and electronic effects of CeO 2-x . Furthermore, Ni-CeSiO 2-x interface with rich extrinsic defects can promote the adsorption and activation of CO 2 as electron donor on reduced λCeO 2-x -NSNT catalysts, which is fast dissociated into CO* and O*. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies can transfer adsorbed O* species to Ni active sites to promote the carbon gasification reaction, which is responsible for the enhancement of catalytic stability in methane dry reforming for λCeO 2-x -NSNT catalysts. 1.5CeO 2-x -NSNT sample with more extrinsic defects has particular higher catalytic stability due to the improvement of anti-coking.

In-situ formation of supported Au nanoparticles in hierarchical yolk-shell CeO2/mSiO2 structures as highly reactive and sinter-resistant catalysts

Jiasheng Fang,Yiwei Zhang,Yuming Zhou,Shuo Zhao,Chao Zhang,Hongxing Zhang,Xiaoli Sheng

A novel strategy was described to construct Au-based yolk-shell SCVmS-Au nanocomposites (NCs), which combined the sol-gel template-assisted process for the assembly of hierarchical SCVmS NCs with modified CeO 2 /mSiO 2 as yolks/shells, and the unique deposition-precipitation (DP) process mediated with Au(en) 2 Cl 3 compounds for the synthesis of extremely stable supported Au nanoparticles (NPs). Characterization results indicated that the obtained SCVmS-Au NCs featured mesoporous silica shells, tunable interlayer voids, movable CeO 2 -modified cores and numerous sub-5   nm Au NPs. Notably, the Au(en) 2 Cl 3 was employed as gold precursors to chemically modify into the modulated yolk-shell structure through the DP process and the subsequent low-temperature hydrogen reduction induced the in-situ formation of abundant supported Au NPs, bestowing these metal NPs with ultrafine grain size and outstanding sinter-resistant properties that endured harsh thermal conditions up to 750   °C. Benefiting from the structural advantages and enhanced synergy of CeO 2 -Au/mSiO 2 -Au yolks/shells, the SCVmS-Au was demonstrated as markedly efficient catalysts with superior activity and reusability in catalyzing the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, and its pristine morphology still maintained after eight recycling tests.

Co-production of syngas and H2 from chemical looping steam reforming of methane over anti-coking CeO2/La0.9Sr0.1Fe1−xNixO3 composite oxides

Kun Zhao,Xiaojie Fang,Chaoxian Cui,Shunshun Kang,Anqing Zheng,Zengli Zhao

Chemical looping steam reforming of methane (CL-SRM) is a novel process for the co-production of syngas and hydrogen without an additional purification process. However, the high activity of oxygen carriers is always accompanied by severe   carbon   deposition via the catalytic cracking of methane, which can result in the rapid deactivation of oxygen carriers and the production of low purity hydrogen. Herein, a series of novel composite oxide carriers of CeO 2 /La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Fe 1−x Ni x O 3 with varying doping ratios of Ni are developed to achieve selective and stable production of syngas and H 2 . The redox performance of CeO 2 /La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Fe 1−x Ni x O 3 was evaluated in a fixed bed reactor coupling with various analytical methods. It is found that the Ni doping ratio of 0.2 can significantly enhance the performance and stability of CeO 2 /La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Fe 1−x Ni x O 3. It is speculated that the proper doping ratio of Ni can simultaneously improve the surface lattice oxygen vacancies and the lattice oxygen migration rate. The CH 4 reforming over CeO 2 /La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3 displays a very stable performance while avoiding obvious carbon deposition within 20 min, in which, the CH 4 conversion, H 2 selectivity , and CO selectivity achieve 85%, 96%, and 88%, respectively. The yield of H 2 (>95% purity) reaches 23 mL/min in the subsequent steam oxidation of reduced CeO 2 /La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3 . Its lattice oxygen can be completely recovered by the final air oxygenation. The CeO 2 /La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3 exhibits high reactivity and stability in 10 redox cycles at 850 °C. These results demonstrate that the doping of Ni affords an efficient manner to regulate the lattice oxygen migration rate of perovskite oxides to match the surface reaction rate, thereby avoiding the deep reduction of surface metal ions within perovskite oxides and resulting carbon depositions during CL-SRM.

Gd, La co-doped CeO2 as an active support for Fe2O3 to enhance hydrogen generation via chemical looping water gas shift

Zhihua Gao,Fengyan Fu,Zhaozhi Zhang,Lili Niu,Min Jin,Jian Zhang,Zekun Zhao

Support materials are indispensable to promote the durability of iron oxides for chemical looping applications. However, the dilution effect of supports on the active phase would lead to decreased bulk oxygen conduction, thus leading to compromised activity. Here, we propose several Gd 3+ , La 3+ and Nd 3+ doped CeO 2 as active supports for iron oxides and investigate the support effect to improve hydrogen generation via chemical looping water gas shift . The characterizations show that the dopants improve the oxygen vacancy concentration in the CeO 2 lattice and Fe 2 O 3 /Ce 0.8 Gd 0.1 La 0.1 O 2-δ exhibits the most oxygen vacancy concentration among all the oxygen carriers. Pulse reactions of oxygen carriers show that an abundance of oxygen vacancy concentration can promote the lattice oxygen transfer in bulk, thus contributing to improved redox reactions . The high oxygen conductivity mitigates the dilution effect on the active phase. Therefore, Fe 2 O 3 /Ce 0.8 Gd 0.1 La 0.1 O 2-δ shows the highest hydrogen yield (∼9.49 mmol −1 .g −1 ) and hydrogen generation rate (∼0.632 mmol.g −1 .min −1 ) with only a slight decrease at 650 °C over 100 cycles. Overall, this work highlights the influence of support properties on the redox reactivity of iron oxides for chemical looping applications.

One Pot-Synthesized Ag/Ag-Doped CeO2 Nanocomposite with Rich and Stable 3D Interfaces and Ce3+ for Efficient Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

Zengsen Sun,Xinhao Wu,Daqin Guan,Xiaoyi Chen,Jie Dai,Yuxing Gu,Sixuan She,Wei Zhou,Zongping Shao

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) technology is promising to produce value-added chemicals and alleviate the climate deterioration. Interface engineering is demonstrated to improve the ECR performance for metal and oxide composite catalysts. However, the approach to form a substantial interface is still limited. In this work, we report a facile one-pot coprecipitation method to synthetize novel silver and silver-doped ceria (Ag/CeO2) nanocomposites. This catalyst provides a rich 3D interface and high Ce3+ concentration (33.6%), both of which are beneficial for ECR to CO. As a result, Ag/CeO2 exhibits a 99% faradaic efficiency and 10.5 A g–1 mass activity to convert CO2 into CO at an overpotential of 0.83 V. The strong interfacial interaction between Ag and CeO2 may enable the presence of surface Ce3+ and guarantee the improved durability during the electrolysis. We also develop numerical simulation to understand the local pH effect on the ECR performance and propose that the superior ECR performance of Ag/CeO2 is mainly due to the accelerated CO formation rate rather than the suppressed hydrogen evolution reaction.

Hierarchical structured Ti-doped CeO2 stabilized CoMn2O4 for enhancing the low-temperature NH3-SCR performance within highly H2O and SO2 resistance

Ning Luo,Fengyu Gao,Hengheng Liu,Tingkai Xiong,Jiajun Wen,Erhong Duan,Chengzhi Wang,Shunzheng Zhao,Honghong Yi,Xiaolong Tang

Developing effective and stable catalysts for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x remains challenging. Herein, we constructed a hierarchical structure by loading CoMn 2 O 4 onto Ti-doped CeO 2 , that CoMn 2 O 4 /CeTiO x catalyst has shown superior deNO x activity (>95% at 100–225 °C), prominent reaction activation energy (28.8 ± 0.9 kJ mol −1 ) and outstanding stability (>75% at 100–200 °C within H 2 O and SO 2 ). The “low-temperature active sites” and “dual anti-poisoning sites” contribute to excellent activity and stability. Firstly, the hierarchical structure boosts generation of active metal-support interface, which is conducive to oxygen migration (including adsorbed oxygen (O ads ), lattice oxygen (O lat ) and oxygen vacancy (O v )) and metal charge transfer (Mn 2+/3+ +Ce 4+ ↔Mn 3+/4+ +Ce 3+ , Ti 4+ +Ce 3+ ↔Ce 4+ +Ti 3+ ). This is the key to breaking through the limits of catalytic activity stability. Secondly, enhanced surface acidity favors NH 3 adsorption and activation, which accelerates -NH 2 /-NH concatenate with NO x through Eley-Rideal mechanism to generate N 2 and H 2 O. Thirdly, the dual strong SO 2 affinity sites by Ti-induced CeO 2 crystal reconstruction retard the active center affected by the sulfate species, which contributes to striking stability. This work highlights the importance of design of isolated active sites to improve SO 2 and H 2 O endurance.

Catalytic performance and an insight into the mechanism of CeO2 nanocrystals with different exposed facets in catalytic ozonation of p-nitrophenol

Shahzad Afzal,Xie Quan,Sen Lu

Ceria based catalysts have been widely applied in ozonation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. Ceria with different exposed facets have not been used in catalytic ozonation. In this study, ceria nanorods (R-CeO 2 ), nanocubes (C-CeO 2 ) and nanooctahedra (O-CeO 2 ) with different exposed facets (110) + (100), (100) and (111)) respectively were used in catalytic ozonation of p-nitrophenol. Two calcination temperatures 300 and 500 °C were selected for comparative catalytic activity. Ceria nanoparticles (NP-CeO 2 ) were also prepared for comparative catalytic activity. Approximately 86%, 71%, 68%, 64%, 60% and 40% TOC was removed by ozonation catalyzed by R300-CeO 2 , C300-CeO 2 , CeO 2 -NP, O300-CeO 2 , R500-CeO 2 and ozonation alone respectively. Nanorod calcined at 500 °C (R500-CeO 2 ) showed lower catalytic activity as compared to R300-CeO 2 . O 3 was also rapidly decomposed by R300-CeO 2 as compared to other catalysts and single ozonation. Inorganic hydroxyl radical scavengers and several characterization techniques were applied for investigating the underlying mechanism of catalytic ozonation. Hydroxyl radicals, surface peroxide and surface atomic oxygen as reactive oxygen species were generated for enhancing the catalytic activity. Furthermore, irrespective of surface area, the difference in catalytic activity of ceria nanoshapes were assigned to the differences in the abundance of surface basic sites, defects densities/oxygen vacancies (OVs) and coordination number of surface atoms. This study provides an insight to use other metals with variety of exposed facets for catalytic ozonation.

Surface Reduced CeO2 Nanowires for Direct Conversion of CO2 and Methanol to Dimethyl Carbonate: Catalytic Performance and Role of Oxygen Vacancy

Zhongwei Fu,Yuehong Yu,Zhen Li,Dongmei Han,Shuanjin Wang,Min Xiao,Yuezhong Meng

Ultralong 1D CeO2nanowires were synthesized via an advanced solvothermal method, surface reduced under H2atmosphere, and first applied in direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2and CH3OH. The micro morphologies, physical parameters of nanowires were fully investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia/carbon dioxide (NH3-TPD/CO2-TPD). The effects of surface oxygen vacancy and acidic/alkaline sites on the catalytic activity was explored. After reduction, the acidic/alkaline sites of CeO2nanowires can be dramatically improved and evidently raised the catalytic performance. CeO2nanowires reduced at 500 °C (CeO2_NW_500) exhibited notably superior activity with DMC yield of 16.85 mmol gcat−1. Furthermore, kinetic insights of initial rate were carried out and the apparent activation energy barrier of CeO2_NW_500 catalyst was found to be 41.9 kJ/mol, much tiny than that of CeO2_NW catalyst (74.7 KJ/mol).Keywords:dimethyl carbonate;carbon dioxide;ceria nanowires;oxygen vacancy
