Surface molecularly imprinted PVA@CS-MIPs membrane for selective recognition and adsorption of creatinine

Ying Li,Xuemeng Li,Mingjie Han,Hailong Bai,Lei Ru,Jiying Men

The elevation of creatinine in the blood is a typical indicator of renal dysfunction, and persistent renal insufficiency can eventually develop into kidney failure, requiring patients to rely on dialysis or kidney transplantation to maintain their lives. This study focuses on the preparation and performance evaluation of a molecularly imprinted membrane, PVA@CS-MIPs, designed for selective adsorption of creatinine. The PVA@CS-MIPs membrane was fabricated using PVA/CScomposite base membrane prepared via solution casting, with α-methylacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer, N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as the crosslinker, and cerium ammonium sulfate (ACS) and concentrated sulfuric acid as initiators. The PVA@CS-MIPs membrane was characterized using FT–IR, SEM, and XPS. The adsorption and permeation behaviors of PVA@CS-MIPs were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were discussed. The results demonstrate that PVA@CS-MIPs exhibit a high adsorption capacity of 322.5 mg/g for creatinine and good adsorption selectivity. Moreover, the membrane exhibits excellent reusability. These findings suggest that the prepared PVA@CS-MIPs possesses specific recognition ability forcreatinine and hold promise for applications in hemodialysis-related fields.

Multifunctional emulsion-electrospun PCL-PVA/SA@nano CB:Que nanofiber membrane for infected wound healing

Shuyue Long,Ying Huang,Zhihao Lin,Sujuan Yan,Xiaoyi Luo,Xia Ren,Xianjun Fu,Zhengao Wang,Wuyi Zhou

Emulsion electrospinning co-delivered nano cuttlebone and quercetin in fibers. • Nano cuttlebone enabled rapid hemostasis and > 96% antibacterial activity. • Nanofiber membrane afforded antioxidant activity and promoted hemostasis. • The membrane suppressed biofilms and coordinated staged infected-wound repair. Persistent bleeding, bacterial colonization, oxidative stress, and prolonged inflammation are major barriers to the repair of infected wounds. An ideal dressing should rapidly control bleeding and bacterial contamination, while regulating oxidative and inflammatory microenvironments to support tissue regeneration. Herein, a multifunctional PCL-PVA/SA@nano CB composite nanofiber membrane was developed by emulsion electrospinning for infected-wound therapy. In this system, polycaprolactone (PCL) provided structural stability, while the hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) phase improves wettability, water absorption, breathability, and bioactive-agent delivery. Nano Cuttlebone acted as a calcium-rich component for rapid hemostasis and antibacterial activity, whereas quercetin contributes antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions. In vitro , the optimized membrane achieved antibacterial efficiencies of 96.72% against S. aureus and 96.58% against E. coli , inhibited S. aureus biofilm formation, scavenged DPPH radicals, and promoted L929 fibroblast proliferation and migration. In vivo , the membrane accelerated hemostasis in a mouse liver bleeding model and promoted S. aureus -infected full-thickness wound healing, reaching 98.9% closure on day 14. The nanofiber membrane also reduced bacterial burden, regulated macrophage polarization, suppressed CD86/TNF-α, enhanced CD206/IL-10, and promoted collagen deposition and re-epithelialization. This study provides a promising multifunctional electrospun dressing for complex infected wounds.

A multilayer PVA-C skin phantom mimicking optical-thermal-mechanical properties for laser medicine

Xuehao Sang,Liushuan Niu,Dong Li,Bin Chen,Qiang Li,Weihui Zeng

A multi-layer polyvinyl alcohol cryogel (PVA-C) skin phantom that comprises stratum corneum, viable epidermis, and dermis is prepared by freezing-thawing cycles combined with layered casting to achieve optical, thermal, and mechanical mimicry of human skin. The properties of PVA-C hydrogel phantoms are predominantly governed by their PVA network structure, whose cross-link can be enhanced by both increasing PVA concentration and freezing-thawing cycles. These two structural reinforcement methods can also effectively enhance the scattering coefficient of the phantom synchronously, and the optical absorption properties of skin tissue can be adjusted by incorporating varying content of melanin. The ideal number of freezing-thawing cycles should be ≥ 7, allowing a stable PVA structure. The optimal parameters for the most skin-like phantom is determined to be 20% (w/w) PVA and 3.5/8/15:1000 (w/w, lightly/medium/highly pigmented epidermis) melanin. Visualization results from schlieren method showed that the proposed three-layer skin phantom closely resembles the in vivo hyperpigmented dermatoses model during Q-switched laser thermotherapy.

Synergistic Cyclodextrin-LiTFSI Coating on LLZTO toward High Ionic Conductivity PVA-Based Composite Electrolytes

Meng Meng,Renli Fu,Keke Ma,Jingnan Yang,Yi Ding,Ran Lu,Xiang Li,Xuhai Liu

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-ionic liquid-Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) composite electrolyte (PIL) has drawn extensive research attention for lithium-ion batteries due to its high ionic conductivity. However, LLZTO tends to aggregate in PVA solution, which significantly impairs the lithium-ion transport rate within PIL. Herein, we coated the surface of LLZTO with a cylindrical cyclodextrin-LiTFSI (abbreviated as C-T) complex and systematically investigated the effects of the C-T coating and LLZTO content on the electrochemical performance of the PIL@C-T composite electrolyte. Specifically, when the LLZTO content is 60 wt %, the ionic conductivity of PIL@C-T can reach 4 × 10–3 S/cm. Based on lithium-ion transport mechanism analysis, we can conclude that the C-T coating can enhance the compatibility between LLZTO and the PVA matrix while constructing fast lithium-ion transport channels between LLZTO ceramic particles. Furthermore, the LiFePO4 | PIL@C-T | Li cell delivers a discharge capacity of 162 mAh/g, and its Coulombic efficiency can be maintained at approximately 100% after 200 cycles. This work provides a new strategy to develop high-performance composite electrolytes, which hold great potential for applications in advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Multifunctional bupivacaine-loaded electrospun PVA-TCN-polydopamine membranes for enhanced wound healing and analgesia

Yue Zhang,Tianqi Feng,Jing Luo,Shuiping Ouyang,Jingyi Yang,Xin Zhou,Kankan Jiang

Wound management faces several critical challenges, including infection, delayed healing, and pain. To address the issues, we developed a multifunctional film by loading bupivacaine into a PVA-TCN-polydopamine electrospun membrane (PVA/TCN@DA-BL), offering a new strategy for wound analgesia and infection control. Chitin nanofibers (TCN), a natural bioactive component, synergistically enhanced the membrane's antibacterial efficacy, structural stability, and overall wound healing capacity. In vitro evaluations confirmed excellent biocompatibility, with cell viability exceeding 95% in both mouse embryonic fibroblasts and macrophages, and hemolysis rates below 1.5%. In a murine wound model, the PVA/TCN@DA-BL groups achieved nearly complete wound closure by day 11, significantly outperforming the control group. Histological analysis revealed accelerated re-epithelialization, dense collagen deposition, and well-organized granulation tissue formation. Immunofluorescence staining showed increased phosphorylation levels of mTOR and p70S6K in the treated wounds, suggesting that REDD1/mTOR-related signaling changes may be associated with the overall wound-repair microenvironment. The work suggests that the PVA/TCN@DA-BL not only provides analgesic effects but also actively promotes cellular proliferation and tissue regeneration through molecular pathway modulation. The electrospun membranes combine structural stability, biocompatibility, and bioactive healing acceleration, showing significant potential for clinical wound management applications.

A microgel-integrated strategy enabling DIW-printable PVA bioinks through GelMS-driven rheology modulation

Zilin Peng,Qinniu Lv,Guoxu Zhang,Yinghong Chen,Xin Tang

Direct ink writing (DIW) of hydrogel scaffolds requires inks that can be easily extruded through nozzles while rapidly recovering sufficient elasticity to maintain shape fidelity after deposition. Here, we propose a microgel-integrated strategy to formulate DIW-printable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) bioinks by dispersing chemically crosslinked gelatin microspheres (GelMS) into a continuous PVA matrix. The GelMS were prepared via water-in-oil emulsification, yielding microspherical building blocks with a median diameter of approximately 13 μm. The resulting GelMS/PVA bioinks exhibited a well-defined printability window, with apparent yielding behavior, pronounced shear-thinning, and rapid thixotropic recovery. The apparent yield stresses of g16% and g18% reached approximately 325 Pa and 690 Pa, respectively, enabling a favorable balance between extrudability and post-deposition stability. The power-law fitting and finite element simulation correlated the rheological properties with nozzle flow fields, where the maximum outlet velocity of g16% reached approximately 6.9 mm/s under 1 bar. After printing, the freeze–thaw cycling could physically crosslink the PVA matrix through crystallite formation, producing mechanically robust and dimensionally stable hydrogels with restricted swelling. This strategy could be extended to alginate and chitosan microgel systems and supported model payload compartmentalization and sustained release. The qualitative extract-based assays further indicated good cytocompatibility, highlighting the potential of GelMS/PVA microgel bioinks for soft tissue engineering applications.

Preparation of modified Fe-MOF/RGO composite PVA/SA toughness hydrogels for electromagnetic shielding

Dongju Liu,Kunlan Diao,Daohai Zhang,Yupeng Hu,Zhi Lei,Teng Zhou,Kaixiang Zou,Shuhao Qin

With the popularity of wireless communication technology, the problem of electromagnetic radiation and interference is highlighted, and the development of efficient electromagnetic shielding materials has become a research priority. In this study, firstly, polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) hydrogels were prepared by physical cross-linking method, and further, iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were prepared by solvothermal synthesis method, and with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a conductive filler, and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) as a cross-linking agent, were prepared by chemical cross-linking method. Modified polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/iron based metal organic framework/reduced graphene oxide (PVA/SA/Fe-MOF/RGO-KH550) composite hydrogel. The results show that the composite hydrogel has a compressive stress of 20.13 MPa, a compressive strain of 83.28 %, and an electromagnetic shielding efficiency of 39.98 dB at a thickness of 3 mm, which reaches the mid-range and high-end level, and it can be applied to industrial control, small and medium-sized data centres, automotive electronics, and general medical devices with medium-high requirements. The excellent performance of the hydrogel comes from the conductive properties and interfacial polarisation effect of RGO, the dielectric loss of Fe-MOF, which work in synergy, and KH550 optimises the interfacial bonding between the filler and the substrate to form a denser crosslinked structure, which strengthens the mechanical properties and electromagnetic shielding effect. The hydrogel preparation process is simple and low-cost, which provides a reference for the design of high-performance electromagnetic shieldingmaterials and an effective solution to the problem of electromagnetic interference.

Application of PVA hydrogel loaded with luteolin nanoparticles in anti EMT treatment after GBM

Long Zhou,Qingyu Zhao,Lijuan Gu,Renfu Tian,Yong Li,Xiaoxing Xiong

Background Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and worst-prognosed primary malignant tumor in the central nervous system. Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an important cause of postoperative invasion and recurrence in GBM. Due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier, local therapy may be the preferred route for treatment of GBM after surgery. Methods Our objective is to develop an anti- EMT functional hydrogel for post-GBM surgery tamponade. We fabricated self-assembled luteolin nanoparticles (LU NPs) via the solvent evaporation method, and characterized their morphology and particle size using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Furthermore, biological evaluations were conducted through CCK-8 assays, EdU staining, flow cytometry for cell cycle analysis, scratch assays, transwell assays and western blot. Ultimately, we constructed a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel loaded with luteolin nanoparticles and validated its therapeutic efficacy in vivo experiments. Results We successfully synthesized LU NPs, which significantly inhibited GBM cell proliferation, as well as GBM cell invasion and migration in vitro. Furthermore, LU NPs downregulated the EMT signaling pathway. We discovered that the observed anti-tumor effects of LU NPs were dependent on the function of β-catenin. Additionally, we successfully constructed a PVA hydrogel loaded with LU NPs (LU@gel). Finally, in the postoperative model of intracranial GBM xenograft in mice, LU@gel effectively suppressed GBM proliferation and EMT, significantly prolonging the survival time of the mice. Conclusions In summary, we have demonstrated that LU@gel exhibits potent anti-GBM effects, primarily attributed to the inhibition of β-catenin-mediated cell proliferation and EMT.

Development and characterization of capsaicin-enriched Dialdehyde starch-PVA films for antimicrobial food packaging

Qincong Luo,Jinyu Ouyang,Luqi Zhan,Guohuan Liang,Xiaojuan Wang

This work explored the polyvinyl alcohol/dialdehyde starch (DAS/PVA) films enriched by capsaicin (Cap) for use as antimicrobial and antioxidant food packaging. The microstructural, UV-shielding, antibacterial, mechanical and water barrier performances of dialdehyde starch/polyvinyl alcohol/capsaicin (DAS/PVA/Cap) films were comprehensively investigated. The results revealed that the capsaicin could be uniformly distributed into the DAS/PVA films to suppress bubble formation and enhance the tensile strength and the elongation at break (from 11.9 MPa to 17.27 MPa and from 269.7 MPa to 322.7 MPa). Moreover, the well distributed capsaicin endowed DAS/PVA film with excellent antimicrobial activity against both S. aureus (91.4 %) and E. coli (73.4 %). The developed DAS/PVA/Cap films were tested for packaging fresh-green grape to prevent microbial infection and prolong their shelf life. These results indicated that the capsaicin-enriched DAS/PVA films possess broad application prospects in fruit and vegetable packaging field.

Qian Lu,Xinyi Wan,Yujie Hou,Yuli Zhang,Zhiliang Guo,Yifan Zhang,Changgan Lai,Lixu Lei

We have proposed a cost-effective method to make a membrane for alkaline water electrolysis by combining organic polymers with inorganic materials, to achieve high ionic conductivity, excellent alkaline stability, and superior electrochemical properties. In this study, NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) powders synthesized hydrothermally, mixed with 2 wt% ZrO 2 are physically crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel to form a ZrO 2 /NiFe-LDH@PVA slurry. The slurry has been coated onto a non-woven fabric to reduce being oxidated by the anodic active substances during the electrolysis process, also, a layer of nylon gauze is sandwiched to improve its mechanical properties. The resulted membrane exhibited exceptional mechanical strength (24.9 MPa tensile strength) and remarkable hydroxide ion conductivity (86.52 mS cm −1 at 90 °C). Furthermore, NiCo/NM and NiFe/NM catalysts were electrodeposited and integrated with the ZrO 2 /LDH@PVA composite membrane to assemble an alkaline water electrolysis device. When tested in 6 M KOH electrolyte at 70 °C and 2.0 V, the device achieved a current density of 781 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation for at least 400 h.

A novel LEuH/PVA luminescent hydrogel with ammonia response and self-recovery luminescence behavior

Yuan Wang,Wenjun Zhang,Jinglin Li,Jie Fu

Searching for fast-responding, recycling, and portable materials for ammonia detection is highly desirable in industrial fields. Here, we report a robust luminescent hydrogel consisting of PVA and layered rare-earth hydroxide (LRH) material synthesized via an in situ method. The hydrogel exhibits a unique response time to different ammonia environments via a fluorescence quenching pattern, and the whole process can be recognized by the naked eye. Furthermore, a fluorescence self-recovery behavior enables the potential application of the hydrogel in ammonia detection. The mechanism of response was elucidated by analyzing fluorescence spectra and studying the changes of hydrogen bonds in the hydrogel.

In Situ Red-Emission Aqueous AIGS@PVA Quantum Dots Backlight Film for White-LEDs

Xihan Luo,Yuhui Dong,Weichao Qi,Hong Zhu,Yuyao Feng,Danni Yan,Yousheng Zou,Haibo Zeng

Non-toxic Ag-In-Ga-S (AIGS) quantum dots (QDs) backlight film has garnered significant attention in white-LEDs (WLEDs) as down-conversion luminescent materials. However, current research on AIGS-based backlight films still faces challenges like low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), polymer incompatibility, etc. This study demonstrates an innovative in situ aqueous-phase synthesis method for producing a high PLQY red-emission AIGS@PVA backlight film. The red-emission AIGS QDs are grown in situ in a PVA matrix, while the surface defects are simultaneously passivated by PVA. Red-emission AIGS@PVA films with a PLQY of 82% are successfully fabricated, exhibiting excellent uniformity, surface flatness, and flexibility. Furthermore, a WLED is successfully fabricated by stacking the red-emission AIGS@PVA film on a green-emission film through the excitation of a blue chip. The WLED achieved a relatively standard white light with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.32), color temperature of 6403 K, and color rendering index (CRI) of 94. The realization of high PLQY in situ aqueous-phase film will push the practical application of backlight film.
