A series of In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized with a facile hydrothermal co-precipitation method and calcination after-treatment at 400 °C. The crystal phase structure, morphology, and elemental composition were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 nanocomposite-based gas sensors were fabricated, and their potential applications were assessed by testing gas-sensing properties systematically. The results exhibited that a small amount of In 2 O 3 dopant improved the dispersion and increased the specific surface area of SnO 2 nanomaterials. Besides, the gas response towards n-butanol gas was promoted and the working temperature was decreased by doping In 2 O 3 . In particular, the 1.5 %In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 nanocomposites-based sensor showed an excellent response of 76.5 towards 50 ppm n-butanol gas at 140 °C. The binding energies of the Sn 3d in nanocomposites varied with the changed doping dosage of In through XPS analysis. The enhanced n-butanol sensing performance of the fabricated In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 sensors at low operating temperature may be due to a synergistic effect between In 2 O 3 and SnO 2 .

Multiple heterojunction made of CuO nanocrystals building on ZnO scaffold buffered by an In 2 O 3 interlayer is fabricated through simple wet chemistry. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy reveal this CuO/In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterojunction forming multi-core-shell nanostructure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is performed to analyze the chemical compositions. Such system is further employed in sunlight-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting, wherein Mott-Schottky analysis demonstrates its flat-band potential negatively shifted. This originates from the lower electron affinity of CuO compared to that of ZnO, favoring photocurrent generation at early onset potential. More importantly, the entire gamut of visible-light is harnessed by CuO, as manifested in the photocurrent action spectrum. Last but not least, the charge-separation is promoted at the In 2 O 3 interface, as reflected in the impedance measurement. The synergistic effect endows the CuO/In 2 O 3 /ZnO photoelectrode with the highest photocurrent of 1.22 mA⋅cm −2 (at ∼1.6 V vs. RHE) that outperforms those of the CuO/ZnO and ZnO photoanodes, respectively.

A novel synthesis of In 2 O 3 porous microcolumnar structures (MCs) by a self-sacrificial template route was carried out using MIL-68. Using a modified calcination strategy, the samples could maintain the original metal organic frame work (MOF) morphology with a high gas accessibility after a slow decomposition of organic ligands. Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were loaded on the samples before or after the MOF calcination, leading to different contact states of the Pt NPs and In 2 O 3 matrix. The gas sensing properties of the samples were systematically investigated using a dynamic testing system. Particularly, sample Pt/In 2 O 3 MCs-1 exhibited a superior NO 2 sensing performance near room temperature ( R g / R a = 44.9 at 1 part-per-million and 5.2 at 100 parts-per-billion (ppb)). The sensor resistance could recover to its baseline even at 40 °C after purging with air without any additional treatment. This can be attributed to the chemical sensitisation of the Pt NPs as well as large contents of pores and channels for gas diffusion. The introduction of humidity in the gas mixture could remarkably decrease the sensor response and recovery times owing to the ‘wet’ NO 2 adsorption mechanism. This study demonstrated a novel synthesis route of Pt-loaded In 2 O 3 porous columnar structures and its potential applications in near-room-temperature detection of ppb-level NO 2 .

Pure In 2 O 3 nanowires (PINW) and CdO–In 2 O 3 composited beaded porous nanotubes (CIBPNT) were successfully prepared by conventional electrospinning method and followed by calcination. The peculiar surface morphological images of as-synthesized nanomaterials were observed via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) from which we could observe a series of irregular holes distributed on the surface of beaded nanotubes. The inner structure of the samples was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results reveal that the element composition of the samples are in conformity with the CdO–In 2 O 3 materials. In addition, the average crystallite size of CIBPNT (17.5 nm) can be estimated from XRD which accords with the TEM images, and XPS analysis supports the oxygen vacancy principle by proving the oxygen vacancies concentration of CIBPNT is more than in PINW. The formaldehyde sensing performances of the samples were evaluated at different temperatures. The result shows that the sensor based on CIBPNT exhibits a excellent response (72–50 ppm formaldehyde) at a low operation temperature of 132 °C, and the value is eight times that of the response of PINW (9 to 50 ppm formaldehyde). The sensor based on CIBPNT could detect 0.1 ppm formaldehyde with a response of 2. In addition, good selectivity and a short response and recovery time (6 s, 12 s) are exhibited. The enhancement of gas sensitivity is attributed to not only the unique beaded shape of hollow and porous 1D nanostructures, but also the high catalytic activity of the CdO additive.

As one of the most significant chemicals in the industry, 1,3-butadiene has been widely used in various fields. Recently, butane dehydrogenation (BDH) has emerged as a new frontier for the production of 1,3-butadiene. However, this process is limited by the low selectivity to the desired product since BDH experiences a complicated dehydrogenation process and the products consist of various C1–C4 hydrocarbons. Here, we demonstrate that an In2O3-modified Pt-based catalyst can serve as an effective catalyst for the dehydrogenation of n-butane to 1,3-butadiene. The optimum catalyst exhibits n-butane conversion and 1,3-butadiene selectivity of 45.2 and 21.9%, respectively, at 575 °C. Further experimental results indicate that In2O3 can improve the dispersion of Pt, regulate acidity, and suppress n-butane dehydroisomerization (BDI).

Rapid and ultrasensitive detection of toxic gases at room temperature is highly desired in health protection but presents grand challenges in the sensing materials reported so far. Here, we present a gas sensor based on novel zero dimensional (0D)/two dimensional (2D) indium oxide (In2O3)/titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) Schottky heterostructures with a high surface area and rich oxygen vacancies for parts per billion (ppb) level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature. The In2O3/Ti3C2Tx gas sensor exhibits a fast response time (4 s), good response (193.45% to 250 ppb NO2), high selectivity, and excellent cycling stability. The rich surface oxygen vacancies play the role of active sites for the adsorption of NO2 molecules, and the Schottky junctions effectively adjust the charge-transfer behavior through the conduction tunnel in the sensing material. Furthermore, In2O3 nanoparticles almost fully cover the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets which can avoid the oxidation of Ti3C2Tx, thus contributing to the good cycling stability of the sensing materials. This work sheds light on the sensing mechanism of heterojunction nanostructures and provides an efficient pathway to construct high-performance gas sensors through the rational design of active sites.

Photo-Fenton-like process is effective towards refractory organics removal for its strong oxidation capacity. Herein, cobalt-doped indium oxide (Co-In 2 O 3 ) with nanotube morphology was prepared and was taken as photo-Fenton-like catalyst. In the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), Co-In 2 O 3 nanotubes exhibited excellent photo-Fenton-like activity with tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation of 98.8 % in 40 min. The visible light driving Co-In 2 O 3 /PMS system showed the reaction rate constants of 0.0998 min −1 , which was 6 folds of the In 2 O 3 /PMS/vis system. Experimental results combining with theoretical chemical calculation demonstrated that the doping of Co can effectively reduce the band gap of In 2 O 3 , thus leading to stronger visible light absorption capability. The presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) disrupted the symmetry and integrity of the catalyst structure and achieved electron enrichment at the reactive site. Simultaneously, Co doping and an appropriate amount of OVs strengthened chemisorption for PMS (from −0.652 eV to −4.224 eV) and higher electron density difference (from 0.49 e – to 0.68 e − ). Our findings provide insight on the contribution role of cobalt doping and OVs in improving photo-Fenton-like catalytic efficiency.

Triethylamine is a typical volatile toxic gas that can cause respiratory system diseases, blood diseases, and eye lesions upon prolonged inhalation. To mitigate this problem, a highly sensitive triethylamine sensor was achieved by loading the precious metal Au onto hexagonal hollow prisms of In 2 O 3 . Prominently, the microstructure of the hollow hexagonal prisms was derived from Material Institute Lavoisier(MIL)-68(In), which provided a larger specific surface area and more active sites. The sensing test results manifested that the sensor based on 0.6% Au/In 2 O 3 owned the best sensing performance among all samples, especially with the response value of 476.3 ( R a / R g ) towards 100 ppm triethylamine at 200°C, which was 37 times higher than that of pristine In 2 O 3 sensor. Additionally, the stability deviation value was less than 5.6% and the selectivity ( Response triethylamine / Response ethanol ) reached up to 28.8. Such distinguished characteristics can be attributed to the delicate hollow hexagonal prisms structure and the decoration of Au, which accelerated gas molecules transport and enhanced oxygen molecule adsorption and dissociation. This work may open up new visas for morphology manipulation of triethylamine sensing materials and intrinsic mechanism of performance enhancement.

In recent years, metal oxides and their composites have been rapidly developed for non-enzymatic glucose sensors. Nevertheless, metal oxides exhibit relatively high electrical resistance, and their selectivity and signal-to-noise ratio for low-concentration glucose detection still require improvement. We here developed a NiO@In 2 O 3 hollow nanofibers-based glucose biosensor with excellent performance. The heterojunction of NiO@In 2 O 3 hollow nanofibers is obtained via a two-step process involving electrospinning and hydrothermal methods, respectively. The resulting sensor exhibits good activity as an electrocatalyst for the oxidation of glucose, with an ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 2 nM and a good sensitivity of 1147 µA mM −1 cm −2 , in line with excellent long-term stability, reproducibility, and good selectivity. These high-performance sensor are validated by monitoring glucose levels in human saliva. It demonstrates that heterojunction of NiO@In 2 O 3 hollow nanofibers can be used as effective electrochemical sensing materials in practical biological applications.

A series of indium oxide-modified Cu/SiO 2 catalysts were synthesized and used to produce ethanol via methyl acetate hydrogenation. In-Cu/SiO 2 catalyst containing 1.0 wt% In 2 O 3 exhibited the best catalytic activity and stability. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized catalysts were investigated using several characterization methods and the results showed that introducing suitable indium to Cu/SiO 2 increased the copper dispersion, diminished the copper crystallite size, and enriched the surface Cu + concentration. Furthermore, the Cu/SiO 2 catalyst gradually deactivated during the stability test, which was mainly attributed to copper sintering and the valence change in surface copper species. In contrast, indium addition can inhibit the thermal transmigration and accumulation of copper nanoparticles to stabilize the catalyst.

Monodisperse In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were firstly synthesized via solvothermal method in three-neck round-bottom flask. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods are used to characterize the prepared UCNPs. The size of monodisperse spheroid nanoparticles prepared can be controllable in 31 nm. The sample exhibits stronger upconversion luminescence (UCL) than reported In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ UCNPs with similar size. Furthermore, the obtained In 2 O 3 UCNPs, by coating the SiO 2 protecting layer, display fine stability. Simultaneously, the UCL properties and possible energy transfer process of In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ and In 2 O 3 : Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ NPs have also been investigated by the spectra distribution and power dependence. The results indicate Yb 3+ /Er 3+ , Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ and Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ codoped In 2 O 3 UCNPs is a probable oxide upconverting material with small size and intense UCL for biological applications.

The electroreduction of CO 2 to CO is fundamentally hindered by sluggish COOH intermediate formation and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we show that this challenge can be addressed through the dynamic in-situ reconstruction of a CuO/In 2 O 3 precursor under electrochemical CO 2 reduction conditions. By employing in-situ electrochemical spectroscopy techniques in combination with theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that the presence of In 2 O 3 facilitates the complete reduction of CuO to metallic Cu. This in-situ reconstruction produces electron-rich Cu-In 2 O 3 interfaces, characterized by a reduced work function and an upshifted Cu 3 d -band center, which promote CO 2 activation and the formation of COOH/CO intermediates. Those interfacial properties lead to a pronounced electronic coupling that endows the electrocatalyst with high CO 2 -to-CO selectivity at low potentials. Specifically, the optimised Cu/In 2 O 3 achieves CO Faradaic efficiency above 90% across −0.5 to −0.9 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode, reaching 97.6% at −0.6 V in a H-type cell, and sustains a high CO selectivity of 96.0% even at an ultralow potential of −0.2 V in a flow-cell configuration. These findings underscore the crucial role of electron-rich interfaces in directing CO 2 reduction with exceptional selectivity and activity toward CO formation.
