Carbon support corrosion of traditional Pt/C catalyst is one of the major contributors causing poor durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Titanium diboride (TiB 2 ) has high electrical conductivity and considerable chemical stability, which making it as a good candidate for catalyst support in PEMFC. In this work, TiB 2 was pretreated by different acid and alkali. The as-obtained samples were characterized by Ex-situ microscopy (ESM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The pore size distribution (PSD) was analyzed by using DFT method. The PSD shows distinct volume in mesopore regions (less than 50 nm). The TiB2 pretreated by H 2 O 2 shows the biggest BET surface area of 57 m 2 g −1 and its PSD focus on mesoporous (1.5-8 nm) region, which resulted to high dispersion and better loading of Pt particles. The Hydrogen oxidization reaction (HOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity was characterized by Rotating Disk Electrode (RDE). The Pt/TiB 2 prepared by H 2 O 2 -pretreated TiB 2 using the colloidal method showed better half-cell electrochemical performance. Facile synthetic for the development of Pt/TiB 2 catalysts was developed.

Polyaniline (PANI) has significant applications in room-temperature NH 3 detection due to its unique and reversible doping-dedoping chemical state, stable electrical conductivity and easy and convenient synthesis process. However, pristine PANI still suffers from poor performance in terms of sensitivity, response speed and detection limit. To address issues of low sensitivity and high detection limit, a platinum (Pt)-modified hollow PANI (Pt-PANI) sensor was designed. The Pt-PANI was fabricated by an in-situ sacrificial template method, and Pt-MnO 2 nanowires obtained from hydrothermal combined impregnation methods, utilizing the potential generated during the sacrificial reaction with acid to induce the polymerization of aniline on the nanowires' surfaces. This hollow tube-like structure with the unique inlay of Pt particles provides numerous gas diffusion pathways, facilitating the penetration of the target gas into the internal space, enhancing the utilization of the inner surface and accelerating the electron transfer . Meanwhile, the presence of Pt particles not only forms Schottky junctions that cause large changes in the resistance of the composites, but also catalysis and accelerates the gas sensing reaction between the target gas and the sensitive materials. Gas sensitivity tests revealed that the prepared Pt-PANI-3 gas sensor exhibits a low NH 3 detection limit of 20.3 ppb, along with reproducibility and long-term stability. Compared to pure PANI-sensor, the sensitivity to 20 ppm NH 3 increased by 17 times. This work offers real-time sensing and monitoring of environmental changes, making it highly promising for future applications.

Pt catalysts are commonly used for chemical reaction processes due to its high catalytic activity and selectivity. Notably, the size of metal particles often has a significant impact on the performance of the metal-loaded catalysts. Therefore, developing highly efficiently synthesis method for the size control of Pt catalysts has great development prospects and research value. In this study, high-throughput size tuning of Pt-based catalysts was achieved by carbonizing the carriers. The experimental and characterization results showed that the size of the loaded Pt nanoparticles varied with different concentrations of glucose solution during carriers carbonization process. The reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a template reaction indicated that the reaction rate constant of the catalyst is approximately linear with the size of Pt particles. Importantly, a laboratory-built high-throughput synthesis system was applied for the catalyst synthesis, which enhances the automation of the laboratory exploratory experiments and makes it possible to synthesize catalysts with controllable size in batches.

As a cocatalyst, chemical states of Pt have significant effects on hydrogen evolution activity of photocatalysts, but the effects have not been elucidated. Herein, we report an effective strategy to greatly improve hydrogen production via regulating the chemical states of Pt. A highly efficient C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with high Pt 0 proportion (denoted as 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H) is successfully prepared. Under visible-light condition (λ ≥ 420 nm), 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H (Pt 0 proportion is 60.1%) affords ∼2.316 mmol h −1 g −1 of hydrogen, approximately four-fold higher than that obtained by a photodeposited sample 1.0%-Pt/CN-P (Pt 0 proportion is 8.2%, ∼0.605 mmol h −1 g −1 of hydrogen). Atmospheric treatment increases the amount of Pt 0 species by causing electrons transfer from N element to Pt 2+ in 1.0%-Pt/CN-BH-H, as proved by in situ experimental investigation and DFT calculations. Mass formation of the Pt 0 species facilitates charge separation. In addition, Pt 0 has a lower hydrogen adsorption energy than that of Pt 2+ ; therefore, photocatalysts containing Pt 0 show an improved hydrogen-evolution performance.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin to produce arene monomers is promising for efficient utilization of lignocellulose. The acidic carrier supported metal nanoparticles exhibit excellent catalytic performance, while basic carrier was not often used. In this study, a basic hydroxyapatite supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt/HAP-3) were developed for the catalytic hydrogenolysis of alkaline lignin, achieving 15.1 % monomer yield. Characterizations of the catalysts and investigation on the basic sites show that high monomer yield is resulted from the synergy of suitable metal nanoparticles and sufficient basic sites of the carrier. This work might be helpful for preparation of efficient catalysts for the hydrogenolysis of lignin in the future.

Carbon support used in commercial Pt/C commonly suffers from corrosion under harsh electrooxidation environment endowed by anodic potential. An alternative support with superior electric conductivity and stable structure should be developed. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 MXene was synthesized as support to immobilize Pt nanoparticles due to its fascinating stable layered structure, and metallic property. Used as electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for the first time, as-prepared Pt/Ti 3 C 2 MXene showed much enhanced electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation, as unraveled by its peak current density of 1.137 mA/cm 2 , nearly three times larger than that of Pt/C (0.388 mA/cm 2 ). Moreover, it also exhibited long-term stability even running for 2 h. In addition, Pt/Ti 3 C 2 MXene was able to catalyze electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution with only 7 mV overpotential at − 10 mA/cm 2 , obviously lower than that of Pt/C (17 mV). The improved MOR and HER activity of Pt/Ti 3 C 2 MXene could be assigned to the unique stable 2D nanosheet structure, excellent electric conductivity, strong binding strength as well as electronic effect between Pt and Ti 3 C 2 MXene. This work widens the application of Ti 3 C 2 MXene in the field of methanol oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction.

Through the slight dissolution of a Pt mesh counter electrode, Pt-deposited carbon fiber cloth (Pt/CFC) was successfully fabricated by successive cyclic voltammetry (CV) scanning from −0.77 V to 0.20 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. In the process of successive CV scanning, the electrocatalytic activity of CFC toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) becomes better and better owing to Pt deposition on CFC, and after 1000 CV cycles, the onset potential of CFC is identical to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (0 V, vs. RHE) with high current densities at low overpotentials (η10, η100, and η170 = 4.5, 34.5, and 43.5 mV at current densities of 10, 100 and 170 mA cm−2). Interestingly, it was found that as-prepared Pt/CFC exhibits decreased HER activity with an onset potential of −0.26 V (vs. RHE) when Pt mesh was changed to bare CFC as the counter electrode, mainly due to the lower Pt loading amount (0.5 mg cm−2) on CFC compared to commercial Pt/C (Pt loading amount of 1.0 mg cm−2) and the inert CFC counter electrode (not like the Pt mesh counter electrode with slight dissolution in acidic media during CV scanning). Generally, there is great competition between the HER from water splitting and hydrogenation reduction of organic matter using the same HER-active electrocatalyst under identical experimental conditions. In this work, Pt/CFC was, therefore, evaluated for hydrogenation reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP) using water as the hydrogen donor in a CFC counter electrode configurated two-compartment reaction system. The results demonstrate that PNP can be effectively converted into PAP with a conversion efficiency of 83.1% and a Faradaic efficiency of 9.9% after electrocatalytic reaction for 12 h at an overpotential of −0.023 V. The findings of this work indicate that Pt counter electrodes are prone to dissolving, resulting in Pt deposition on the working electrode in acidic media, readily causing the false appearance of a non-Pt working electrode with high HER activity. Additionally, the Pt-deposited working electrode produced by this electrochemical approach is efficient for hydrogenation reduction of organic substances into high value-added chemicals using water as the hydrogenation donor.

Atomic surface engineering for nanostructures significantly contributes to the enhancement of electrocatalysis for a given chemical reaction. However, exploring a facile method to elaborately regulate surfaces at atomic scale remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report the construction of atomically rough surfaces (ARSs) on Au-based binary alloys through a novel and controllable gold (Au)-catalyzed strategy, which involves the first synthesis of Au-based bimetallic nanoalloys, i.e., AuPd and AuAg, and subsequent reduction of another metal ions (Pt, Pd, or Ag) initiated by Au sites on the alloy particle surfaces. By combining ARSs with low-coordinated atoms with ligand effect induced by vicinal Au atoms, the as-prepared ARSs exhibit good activity and durability toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in an alkaline medium. In particular, the Pd-Pt ARSs on the AuPd alloy particle surface (denoted as AuPd-Pt) exhibit the highest electrocatalytic EOR performance in terms of both specific activity (14.9 mA cm –2 ) and mass activity (28.5 A mg –1 ), surpassing those of their AuPd alloy counterparts, commercial Pd/C catalyst, and most Pd-based electrocatalysts reported recently. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy reveals that the EOR process on the Pd-Pt ARSs strongly prefers incomplete oxidation, which is further authenticated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Fundamental knowledge of the active site requirements for the activation of C−O bonds on heterogeneous catalysts is essential for the design of efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalysts. Pt−WOx (x < 3) catalysts have shown activity and selectivity for the C−O bond breaking of various biomass-derived oxygenates. Yet, the nature of the active sites and the structure−performance relationship have not been well understood because of the intimate coupling of multiple sites. Here, we construct a hybrid catalyst with integrated defective tungsten oxide (e.g., WO2.72) and Pt/C to investigate the role of multiple sites (e.g., metal sites, Bro̷nsted acid, and oxygen vacancy) that are active toward the hydrogenolysis of esters to alkanes in Pt−WOx catalysts. Experimental and theoretical results suggest that oxygen vacancies derived from the defective tungsten oxide (WOx) supply coordinatively unsaturated sites to adsorb and activate the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group of esters, while Pt metal provides an active hydrogen atom for this process. More importantly, it is found that the hydroxyl derived from W−OH in WOx, as a typical Bro̷nsted acid site, can contribute to the adsorption and activation of the C−O bond of esters. The synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and Bro̷nsted acid sites results in a remarkably efficient acyl C−O bond cleavage of esters, which boosts the hydrodeoxygenation of esters under mild conditions (T ≤ 200 °C). These insights into the structure−performance relationships offer rational methods for designing efficient catalysts for low-temperature hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived esters.

Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have emerged as a promising energy conversion technology due to their high energy efficiency, low operating temperature, zero pollutant emissions, and carbon neutrality, rendering them highly attractive for transportation and stationary power applications. However, enhancing the durability of Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts while maintaining high activity remains a critical challenge for PEMFCs. In this study, a Pt/C@TPTZ450 ORR catalyst was synthesized via the surface modification of Pt/C with the nitrogen-containing organic small-molecule 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPTZ), resulting in the formation of an ultrathin nitrogen-containing coating layer (≈0.5 nm) that effectively stabilizes the catalyst structure. The modified catalyst exhibits enhanced ORR mass activity in rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements compared with pristine Pt/C. More importantly, the TPTZ-derived coating effectively restricts the undesirable processes of Pt catalyst particle growth, carbon support corrosion, Pt migration, and Pt leaching during long-term operation. Consequently, the durability of the Pt/C@TPTZ450 catalyst is significantly improved compared to that of the pristine Pt/C catalyst. After 30,000 cycles of accelerated stress tests (ASTs), the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with the Pt/C@TPTZ450 catalyst exhibits a voltage decay of only 22 mV at a current density of 0.8 A/cm2, accompanied by an electrochemical active surface area decay of 38.42%. These durability metrics fully meet the technical targets set by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for proton-exchange membrane fuel cell catalysts. Furthermore, this work provides new insights and practical solutions for enhancing catalyst durability.

The accurate, ultrasensitive and rapid onsite analysis of perchlorate either in water, soil or air is urgently needed for public security checking, explosive ordnance disposal, environment monitoring and forensic analysis. To achieve it, a Pt(II) terpyridyl complex-based sensing platform that can realize the onsite ultrasensitive, colorimetric and luminescent dual-mode, rapid and direct detection of perchlorate in water, soil and air was successfully developed by systematic molecular design. The high-contrast color change from pale-yellow to purple-red and turn-on mode red luminescent emission can greatly eliminate environmental fluctuations and background autofluorescence, thus enabling the detection of perchlorate more accurately, discriminatively and efficiently even in a complex environment. The excellent water-solubility of the Pt(II) terpyridyl complex and the introduction of the hydrogel matrix largely enhance the sensing capacity and achieve the direct ultrasensitive detection of perchlorate microparticulates in soil or air, with a limit of detection of 0.45 ng by naked eye and 0.02 fg by common optical microscope. The present study provides a valuable strategy for designing a Pt(II) complex-based sensor with high-contrast color change, high signal-to-noise ratio luminescence, and ultrasensitive detection ability for particulate analytes, which would shine light on the design of high-performance sensing platforms for various analytes.

Highly ordered arrays of WS 2 crystals are grown on the SiO 2 /Si substrate using Pt/Ti metal as seed materials by a low pressure chemical vapor deposition method. High magnification SEM images and Raman spectrum reveal that the WS 2 flakes are induced and grown around the Pt/Ti metal, and the diameter of a single unit is up to 100 μm, which have contribute to the direct construction of functional devices on the substrate. HRTEM measurements further confirm that the obtained flakes are the WS 2 crystal with good crystallinity. The results show that highly ordered arrays of WS 2 crystals will have potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.
