L -histidine ionic liquid modified magnetic COF was successfully fabricated. • Covalent modification of supports with IL optimized the enzyme microenvironment. • Introduction of IL enhanced the activity and stability of immobilized lipase. • IL boosted lipase-substrate affinity and catalytic efficiency. • Magnetic responsiveness improved the separation efficiency of immobilized lipase. This study proposes an innovative immobilized lipase construction strategy to address the low activity and poor stability limitations of current biocatalysts for flavor ester synthesis. L -histidine-based ionic liquid (IL) is covalently grafted onto the surface of magnetic covalent organic framework (COF) via Schiff base reaction, and porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) is further covalently immobilized on the composite carrier through amide bond coupling. The resulting Fe₃O₄@COF-IL-PPL shows 1.6-fold higher catalytic activity and 2.3-fold better thermal stability than free PPL, and 32% higher activity retention after cycles than PPL immobilized on IL-free COF carrier. Its optimal reaction pH and temperature are 7.5 and 50 °C respectively, maintaining 86% of initial activity at 60 °C and 76% activity after 6 h incubation at 50 °C. Under n-hexane reaction system, the isoamyl acetate yield reaches 87.4% under optimal conditions, and the biocatalyst retains 71.4% activity after 10 consecutive isoamyl acetate synthesis cycles. Although the additional preparation steps and higher cost of the support need to be considered for industrial applications, the improved catalytic performance of Fe 3 O 4 @COF-IL-PPL verified the effectiveness of IL surface modification strategy, and the system can be further extended to solvent-free systems to verify its broader applicability.

A light-responsive oxidase-mimicking nanozyme was constructed based on a MOF@COF heterojunction. • The nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor enables rapid, smartphone-compatible TAC detection. • Light-driven, O₂-dependent ROS pathway enables photoregulated nanozyme design for food analysis. A rapid and accurate assay for total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is essential in food quality control and nutritional evaluation. In this study, a light-responsive oxidase-like nanozyme, UiO-66-NH 2 @TpPa-COF, was constructed by in-situ growth of TpPa-COF on amino-functionalized UiO-66-NH 2 . Comprehensive characterization confirmed a tightly coupled, crystalline, and hierarchically porous heterostructure with a narrowed band gap and enhanced charge transfer. Under 365 nm light, the composite exhibited efficient photoelectrochemical performance and oxidase-like activity via a light-driven, oxygen-dependent reactive oxygen species pathway. As a colorimetric TAC (μM AA Eq.) sensor, it achieved a wide linear range (0.02–60 μM for AA), a low detection limit (5.988 nM), and reliable performance in real samples (fruits, vegetables, beverages) with recoveries of 96–107%. This work provides both a sensitive nanozyme-based sensing platform and insights into the rational design of MOF/COF hybrids for advanced food analysis. A light-responsive oxidase-mimicking UiO-66-NH₂@TpPa-COF nanozyme was constructed via in-situ interfacial growth. Amino groups act as molecular bridges, forming a coupled heterojunction with narrowed bandgap, hierarchical porosity, and efficient charge separation. Under 365 nm UV, it shows reversible, O₂-dependent ROS-mediated oxidase activity. Integrated with a smartphone-based colorimetric platform, it enables rapid on-site TAC quantification in foods. This work offers both a practical food quality tool and a blueprint for MOF/COF heterojunctions in sensing. Download: Download high-res image (122KB) Download: Download full-size image

An AFA-TD-DBDI-MS platform was constructed and optimized for THs analysis. • Hydroxyl-functionalized COF-coated stir bars showed high adsorption capacity. • SBSE-AFA-TD-DBDI-MS enabled THs detection with LODs of 0.0061–0.0312 ng/mL. • The developed method was promising for THs detection in complex matrices. Triazine herbicides are widely used in agricultural production. However, their environmental persistence and mobility pose potential threats to ecological safety and human health. Herein, a novel analytical method integrating stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) with airflow-assisted thermal desorption dielectric barrier discharge ionization mass spectrometry (AFA-TD-DBDI-MS), an ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AMS), was developed for the sensitive determination of triazine herbicides. A hydroxyl-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF-HF) was synthesized and used to fabricate COF-HF-coated stir bars via physical adhesion. The as-prepared stir bars exhibited outstanding extraction performance toward triazine herbicides, and the underlying adsorption mechanism was systematically investigated. The established COF-HF-based SBSE-AFA-TD-DBDI-MS method demonstrated good linearity (R² ≥ 0.9957), satisfactory recoveries (91.31%–98.81%), good repeatability (RSD ≤ 8.49%), and low limits of detection (0.0061–0.0312 ng/mL). This study provides a rapid and efficient strategy for monitoring trace triazine pollutants in environmental water and serum matrices. Lomefloxacin (LOM) residues in food can induce bacterial resistance and pose serious health risks. Therefore, sensitive detection of trace LOM is of great significance. A recyclable and degradable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensor, which is based on stimuli-responsive DNA/covalent organic frameworks (COF) and cellulose hydrogel (CA-β-CD), was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of LOM. Specifically, by utilizing the high adsorption capacity of COF, a large number of Raman-active signal molecules (methylene blue, MB) were incorporated to form a stimuli-responsive DNA/COF complex that responds to the LOM. Subsequently, a recyclable SERS substrate was fabricated through the integration of cyclodextrin-functionalized cellulose gel (CA-β-CD) with green leaf@Ag NPs. Upon exposure to the target, LOM competitively bound to the aptamer, triggering the release of MB, which was then captured through host-guest interactions by the CA-β-CD, thereby generating a strong SERS signal. The immobilized MB can be desorbed by modulating the pH, which enables the efficient regeneration and reuse of the SERS substrate. Furthermore, the cellulose gel can be degraded in the presence of cellulase, ensuring an environmentally sustainable detection approach. The proposed method achieved ultrasensitive detection of LOM over a linear range of 1.0 × 10 −11 to 1.0 × 10 −5 mol/L, with a detection limit as low as 3.56 × 10 −12 mol/L. Moreover, the biosensor demonstrated outstanding specificity and robustness in the face of potential interferents and has been successfully applied to the analysis of real-world samples. This work offers a novel and reliable strategy for the sensitive detection of antibiotics in food matrices.

A novel direct Z -scheme heterojunction of 0.25-pCOF/CdS with rich S-vacancy defects was successfully fabricated. • 0.25-pCOF/CdS enabled efficient photocatalytic extraction of U(VI) under air without sacrificial agents. • 0.25-pCOF/CdS showed a consistent photocatalytic extraction ratio of over 98% for U(VI) in a range of 5–100 mg/L. • 0.25-pCOF/CdS achieved an ultrahigh extraction ratio of 99.68% for U(VI) when treating real uranium mine wastewater. • The dual strategy of combining S-vacancy defects and heterojunction engineering effectively enhanced charge separation. Photocatalysis is considered as an attractive approach for treating uranium-containing wastewater. Herein, through in-situ growth of a porphyrin covalent organic framework (pCOF) on CdS nanospheres, a novel direct Z -scheme heterojunction of 0.25-pCOF/CdS with rich S-vacancy defects was successfully prepared for visible-light-driven photocatalytic extraction of U(VI) under an aerobic atmosphere without hole scavengers. The optimized 0.25-pCOF/CdS exhibited a consistent photocatalytic extraction ratio of over 98% for U(VI) in a wide range of 5 to 100 mg/L, with excellent anti-interference ability. Notably, 0.25-pCOF/CdS achieved an ultrahigh extraction ratio of 99.68% for U(VI) when treating real uranium-containing wastewater, accompanied by the substantial removal of Fe 3+ , which contributed to the deep purification of wastewater. The reduced uranium mainly accumulated on the CdS surface as U 3 O 8 , while the ·O 2 − and e − were identified as the dominant active species for U(VI) photocatalytic extraction. The dual strategy reported here combines vacancy defects and heterojunction engineering, effectively enhancing charge separation and accelerating directional charge transfer, thereby improving U(VI) photocatalytic extraction performance, and offers a feasible guideline for designing efficient photocatalysts for uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater. The residue of phthalates (PAEs) in edible products can cause endocrine disorders in the human body. In this study, a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) probe coated with fluoro-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (F-COFs) was developed for the extraction of PAEs. The synthesized F-COFs coating exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and high thermal stability, making it suitable for adsorbing PAEs. The established F-COF-SPME-GC method achieved a green analytical chemistry score of 0.63 in terms of environmental friendliness. It also exhibited satisfactory linear ranges of 0.02-100 μg L -1 for all PAEs (R²≥0.9901), and limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.010 to 0.019 μg L -1 . The method was successfully applied to determine PAEs in six edible oils and six traditional medicinal crops, exhibiting relatively strong resistance to matrix interference. These results indicated that the F-COF-SPME probe provided significant promise for the efficient and robust adsorption and detection of PAEs in complex samples.

The aim of current work was to explore a new material for the fast, efficient and selective recovery of precious metal silver (Ag(I)) from electroplating effluents to alleviate its high consumption and mitigate its environmental pollution. In this study, the sulfydryl-rich covalent organic framework (COF-SH) was prepared by solvothermal method . Its Ag(I) adsorption performance was evaluated by batch adsorption experiments that the effects of initial Ag(I) concentration, ratio of adsorption dosage to solution volume, adsorption time and reacting temperature were studied. The isothermal data fitted well with the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity at 298 K was up to 609.89 mg/g. The adsorption rate was very fast almost achieving adsorption equilibrium within 16 min. The adsorption rate and adsorption capacity increased with the increase in reaction temperature. The perfect fitting with pseudo-second-order kinetic model indicated the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption process. Weber–Morris intraparticle diffusion model divided the adsorption process into three stages and temperature had a positive correlation with the first stage, external surface diffusion . The thermodynamic fitting results suggested that the adsorption process was endothermic, disordered and spontaneous. In terms of application, COF-SH achieved highly selective adsorption of Ag(I) in simulated electroplating wastewater with coexistence of multiple metal ions , especially at high acidity (≥1 M HNO 3 ), and the increase in concentration of competing ions had no affects. In addition, 1 M HNO 3 + 0.3 M thiourea (TU) could be used as desorption agent with 100% Ag(I) desorbed from the adsorbed adsorbent COF-SH-Ag.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as one of the best future profession power sources owing to their ultrahigh energy density. Nevertheless, the commercialized Li-S batteries is challenging owing to the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), poor electronic activity of sulfur and safety issues. In this work, flexible and binder-free 3D porous 1,3,5-triformylbenzene-tris(4-aminophenyl) amine (Tf-TAPA) covalent-organic framework (COF) derived N-doped carbon (CTT)/ 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXene) paper is designed as electronic conductive sulfur host to restrict the LiPSs. To boost the safety of Li-S batteries and further reduce the LiPSs diffusion, all-solid-state Li-S batteries are constructed by utilizing polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based solid electrolyte with low LiPSs solubility and high safety. With the synergistic advantages of porous and electronic conductive CTT, MXene and solid-state electrolyte, the all-solid-state Li-S batteries display excellent safety character and stable cycling stability about 584 mAh g −1 even after 100 cycles.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as one of the most significant members of the porous organic frameworks, have been well used in the photocatalysis owing to their outspread π-conjugated framework, high crystallinity and regular pore structure. Herein, after reducing the labile imine-linked COF-300 to the more stable amine-linked COF-300-AR, we for the first time demonstrated that COF-300-AR was the light-responsive oxidase mimic. COF-300-AR exhibited excellent oxidase-mimicking activity under purple light stimulation (λ = 400 nm), which can catalyze the oxidation of classical substrates such as 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzydine (TMB) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) by the formation of •OH and O2•– free radicals in the presence of dissolved oxygen. The COF-300-AR oxidase mimic has outstanding advantages of easy light control, high stability, good reusability, and highly catalytic oxidation capacity and has been applied to detect glutathione (GSH) levels in HL60 cells with good selectivity and high sensitivity. This study will broaden the sensing applications of COFs and offer a promising build block for the construction of artificial enzymes.

Credible and on-site detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) in complex matrixes is significant for food security and environmental monitoring. Herein, a novel COF/methylene blue@MnO2 (COF/MB@MnO2) composite featured abundant signal loading, a specific recognition unit, and robust oxidase-like activity was successfully prepared through facile assembly processes. The multifunctional composite acted as a homogeneous electrochemical and photothermal dual-mode sensing platform for OPs detection through stimuli-responsive regulation. Without the presence of OPs, the surface MnO2 coating could recognize thiocholine (TCh), originating from acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine (ATCh), and exhibited a distinctly amplified diffusion current due to the release of plentiful MB; while the residual MnO2 nanosheets could only catalyze less TMB into oxidized TMB (oxTMB) with a typical near-infrared (NIR) absorption, enabling NIR-driven photothermal assay with a low temperature using a portable thermometer. Based on the inhibitory effect of OPs on AChE activity and OP-regulated generation of TCh, chlorpyrifos as a model target can be accurately detected with a low limit of detection of 0.0632 and 0.108 ng/mL by complementary electrochemical and photothermal measurements, respectively. The present dual-mode sensor was demonstrated to be excellent for application to the reliable detection of OPs in complex environmental and food samples. This work can not only provide a complementary dual-mode method for convenient and on-site detection of OPs in different scenarios but also expand the application scope of the COF-based multifunctional composite in multimodal sensors.

A Ti4+-functionalized magnetic covalent organic framework material with flexible branched polymers (mCOF@ε-PL@THBA-Ti4+) built via an immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) enrichment strategy was proposed through post-synthesis modification. Hydrophilic ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) rich in amino active groups was first introduced in the fabrication of the phosphopeptide enrichment material to increase the hydrophilicity while providing more functional modification pathways of the material. 2,3,4-Trihydroxy-benzaldehyde (THBA) provides abundant binding sites for the immobilization of numerous Ti4+, which is advantageous for the subsequent efficient phosphopeptide enrichment. The magnetic nanocomposite exhibited outstanding performance of phosphopeptide enrichment with good selectivity (1 : 5000), a low detection limit (2 fmol), and relatively high loading capacity (66.7 mg g−1). What's more, after treatment with mCOF@ε-PL@THBA-Ti4+, 16 endogenous phosphopeptides from fresh saliva of healthy people were recognized by MALDI-TOF MS, and 50 phosphopeptides belonging to 35 phosphoproteins from the serum of uremia patients were detected by nano-LC-MS/MS. Proteomics data analysis for the differential protein selection between uremia and normal controls was conducted using R software, and four down-regulated and three up-regulated proteins were obtained. The results suggested that the prepared material has potential applications in biomarker discovery.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is widely used in the food industry as a bactericide due to its strong oxidizing ability. However, excess H2O2 in food can lead to chronic diseases, making it necessary to develop a rapid monitoring method. An electrochemical electrode based upon a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with combined covalent organic framework (COF) and amino-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT-NH2) has been developed. The modifier was prepared by assembling the COF onto the surface of MWNT-NH2. Under optimal conditions, the performance of the modified electrode was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a linear range from 20 to 140 μM and a detection limit of 0.14 μM. In addition, the modified electrode had good stability and reproducibility. Good selectivity in presence of potential interferences and the successful application for the determination H2O2 in environmental water and chicken feet suggest its potential for practical analysis.
