Flexible thermoelectric generators (FTEGs), which can overcome the energy supply limitations of wearable devices, have received considerable attention. However, the use of toxic Te-based materials and fracture-prone electrodes constrains the application of FTEGs. In this study, a novel Ag2Se and Poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) FTEG with a high output performance and good flexibility is developed. The thermoelectric columns formulated in the work are environmentally friendly and reliable. The key enabler of this work is the use of embedded EGaIn electrodes, which increase the temperature difference collected by the thermoelectric column, thereby improving the FTEG output performance. Additionally, the embedded EGaIn electrodes could be directly printed on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds without wax paper, which simplifies the preparation process of FTEGs and enhances the fabrication efficiency. The FTEG with embedded electrodes exhibits the highest output power density of 25.83 μW/cm2and the highest output power of 10.95 μW at ΔT= 15 K. The latter is 31.6% higher than that of silver-based FTEGs and 2.5% higher than that of covered EGaIn-based FTEGs. Moreover, the prepared FTEG has an excellent flexibility (>1500 bends) and output power stability (>30 days). At high humidity and high temperature, the prepared FTEG maintains good performance. These results demonstrate that the prepared FTEGs can be used as a stable and environmentally friendly energy supply for wearable devices.

First-order solid–solid phase transition of crystalline solids at the nanoscale has attracted an increasing interest in solid-state physics and chemistry, which can be used to alter the properties of materials without changing chemical compositions. Herein, we report the results of our comparative studies on phase transitions between tetragonal (t), orthorhombic (β), and cubic (α) polymorphs in Ag2Se nanocrystals. A significant discrepancy in stability and phase transition behavior is determined for t-Ag2Se nanocrystals, which were prepared separately by two different methods. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable-temperature XRD studies reveal that the t-Ag2Se nanocrystals prepared by the oleylamine (OLA)-mediated method show a highly temperature- and time-sensitive metastability and undergo a t → β → α → β phase transition during the thermal cycling, in which the t → β transition is exothermic and irreversible, whereas the β → α transition is reversible. Similarly, the reversible β → α structure transition is detected in the β-Ag2Se nanocrystals, which were also prepared using the OLA-mediated method with different post-treatment manners and stabilized conditions. In contrast, the t-Ag2Se nanocrystals prepared by the PVP-assisted solvothermal method are more stable and exhibit a direct, reversible t → α phase transition without undergoing the β phase; however, when heated to a high temperature, for example, ≥250 °C, the stability of the t phase and the reversibility of the t → α transition will be destroyed due to the sintering and size increase of the sample, which is confirmed by the determination of the t → α → β phase transition in the DSC cycle. The formation of the t phase is attributed to the α → t structure transformation with the temperature cooled from synthetic temperatures (160–220 °C) to room temperature. Moreover, the reasons for the difference in the stabilities and phase transitions of t-Ag2Se nanocrystals prepared in our two methods are discussed based on the influences of size, surface (or shape), and defects on the thermodynamics and kinetics of a solid–solid structure transformation.

Embodied artificial intelligence (Embodied AI) depends on the integration of multimodal sensing and physical interaction to achieve autonomous perception and adaptive control in complex environments. However, conventional multimodal sensing systems often rely on separate sensors for each physical stimulus, leading to integration challenges and signal interference. Here, we report a monolithic bimodal sensor based on a 3D Ag 2 Se thermoelectric network that enables simultaneous and decoupled detection of temperature and pressure within a single device. The sensor demonstrates a high temperature sensitivity of −122.7 µV K −1 with a fast response time of ∼0.14 s, and a high pressure sensitivity of −2.94% kPa −1 with a fast response time of about 0.08 s, indicating excellent signal isolation between the two sensing channels. When combined with deep learning, the sensor enables a real-time intelligent sorting system that achieves 96% recognition accuracy across nine materials, outperforming single-mode sensing approaches. This work provides an integrated multimodal sensing solution that advances the deployment of embodied AI in complex environments.

Interface engineering can effectively reduce thermal conductivity in thermoelectric materials, resulting in enhanced thermoelectric performance. However, achieving synergistically optimized thermal and electrical transport properties remains challenging. In this study, MoSe2 was decorated into Ag2Se by a two-step solvothermal/hydrothermal process combined with spark plasma sintering. Spark plasma sintering enables interfacial ion exchange, resulting in reduced carrier concentration and increased Seebeck coefficient. Meanwhile the decorated MoSe2 at the grain boundaries strongly scatters phonons, along with the reduced electrical conductivity, resulting in significantly reduced thermal conductivity. Consequently, the Ag2Se/4mol% MoSe2 composite achieves a notable maximum figure of merit of 1.07 at 390 K and a theoretical maximum conversion efficiency of 2% at a temperature difference of 45 K, indicating that MoSe2 doping substantially improves the thermoelectric characteristics of n-type Ag2Se. This nanostructured interface design approach may be useful for improving the performance of various thermoelectric materials.

Photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors have the advantages of self-powered, broadband, and cooling-free, which have great potential for application in the fields of security monitoring, fire detection, and military reconnaissance. However, the practical application of PTE detectors still faces problems such as complicated preparation process, limited spectral detection range, and poor reliability. In this work, a spray-coating process is proposed for the fabrication of Ag 2 Se-based PTE detectors. Cold pressing is then used to improve the PTE properties of the devices. Self-powered detection was achieved over a broadband range of 405–2500 nm, with an output voltage of 6.83 mV at an optical power density of 100 mW/cm 2 at 405 nm. The cold-pressed detector maintains a stable response after 3900 s of continuous operation, with the fastest response time of 0.9 s. Further design of the thermopile structure validates its promising applications in contact human temperature monitoring and non-contact human infrared detection. This work provides a new method for the preparation of broadband, self-powered PTE detectors.

Broadband photodetectors that can decipher the wavelength (λ) and intensity (I) of an unknown incident light are urgently demanded. Photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors can achieve ultrabroadband photodetection surpassing the bandgap limitation; however, their practical application is severely hampered by the lack of deciphering strategy. In this work, we report a variable elimination method to decipher λ and I of the incident lights based on an integrated Ag2Se film-based PTE detector. Nanostructured Ag2Se films with controlled thickness are synthesized using an ion sputtering of Ag and a room-temperature selenization method and then assembled into a detector. Under identical illumination, Ag2Se films of different thicknesses produce varying output photothermal voltages, influenced by factors including λ. By establishing a direct relationship between the photothermal voltage and the absorption of Ag2Se films of varied thickness, we successfully eliminate variables independent of λ, thus determining λ. Subsequently, I is determined by the calibrated responsivity relationship using obtained λ. Our PTE detector achieves a broadband spectrum from 400 to 950 nm and high accuracy, with deviations as low as ∼2.63 and ∼0.53% for deciphered λ and I, respectively. This method allows for self-powered broadband decipherable photodetection without a complex device architecture or computational assistance, which could boost the research enthusiasm and promote the commercialization of PTE broadband detectors.

Decoupling the interrelated thermoelectric parameters is challenging for developing Ag 2 Se-based room temperature thermoelectrics. In this study, we construct specific grain boundary complexes that contain nano-sized TiO 2 and Au particles in Ag 2 Se through a one-step solvothermal process combined with spark plasma sintering. The decorated Ag 2 Se exhibits enhanced power factor due to the increased carrier concentration and maintained carrier mobility, while the introduced broadband phonon scattering effectively reduced thermal conductivity. The decoupled electrical and thermal transport properties result in a high zT value of 1.19 at 390 K in the Ag 2 Se decorated by 0.4 wt.% TiO 2 and 0.5wt.% Au, along with improved mechanical properties. The device assembled by using the optimal sample shows a maximum output power of 65 mW and a maximum energy conversion efficiency of 2.3% under a temperature difference of 80 K. The aging test results highlight the good stability of our devices. Therefore, constructing grain boundary complexes could be a promising strategy for developing practical Ag 2 Se thermoelectrics.

Efficient aqueous synthetic methods for near-infrared quantum dots as bioimaging agents are urgently required. In this work, a simple and fast synthesis of highly luminescent, near-infrared Ag 2 Se quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous media is reported. The method avoids high temperature, pressure and organic solvents to directly generate water-dispersible Ag 2 Se QDs. The photoluminescence emission of Ag 2 Se QDs ranges from 835 to 940 nm by different Ag:Se molar ratio. Using the ZnSe as a shell, the quantum yield reaches up to 42%. The Ag 2 Se ZnSe QDs with high quantum yield, near-infrared and low cytotoxic could be used as good cell labels, showing great potential applications in bio-imaging.

Flexible sensors are evolving from single-parameter to multi-modal measurement. Dual-modal flexible tactile sensors capable of detecting both temperature and pressure are essential for human–machine interaction and wearable health monitoring. Here, we present a flexible dual-modal sensor constructed from a sponge framework decorated with MXene–Ag 2 Se nanocomposite. The heterogeneous MXene–Ag 2 Se interfaces enhance carrier transport and conductivity. A three-electrode configuration with spatially separated in-plane thermoelectricity and out-of-plane piezoresistivity enables effective decoupling of temperature and pressure sensing. The MXene–Ag 2 Se@sponge sensor demonstrates high pressure sensitivity (2.202 kPa − 1 in 0–25 kPa, 0.466 kPa − 1 in 25–60 kPa, and 0.076 kPa − 1 in 60–300 kPa), a fast response time (37 ms) for pressure sensing, and excellent durability. For temperature sensing, it achieves an ultralow detection limit of 0.2 K, a high Seebeck coefficient of 175.47 µV/K, and stable cycling performance. In addition, the MXene–Ag 2 Se@sponge dual-modal sensor is applied to human pulse monitoring, joint motion detection, and finger temperature measurement, highlighting its potential for wearable biomedical sensing. Furthermore, a sensor array was also implemented as electronic skin, enabling simultaneous temperature-pressure mapping with high spatial resolution. This work provides a promising strategy for intelligent robotics and flexible electronics.

Flexible inorganic thermoelectrics are promising for the Internet of Things and wearable electronics. While solution processing offers a facile route to such materials, simultaneously achieving mechanical flexibility and substantial power output remains challenging. Here, we report a microstructure-engineering strategy to fabricate freestanding Ag 1.8 Se/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite films with ultralow CNT content (0.9 wt %). An interwoven CNT network establishes dense, conductive interfaces with Ag 1.8 Se nanowires, enabling efficient carrier transport and exceptional flexibility. The ∼10-μm films achieve a power factor of 20.9 μW cm −1 K −2 at 380 K and retain >95% of their performance after 20,000 bending cycles at a 2-mm radius. An assembled flexible device delivers an output power of 15.4 μW and a normalized power density of 4.63 μW cm −1 K −2 under a 50 K temperature gradient. Integrated with biodegradable supports, the devices demonstrate recyclability and enable sap flow monitoring. This facile and sustainable approach is generalizable to other systems such as Bi 2 Te 3 and Cu 2 Se.

Silver selenide quantum dots (Ag2Se QDs) show great advantages in tumor imaging due to their excellent optical performance and good biocompatibility. However, the ultrasmall particle size of Ag2Se QDs allows them to cross the blood–brain barrier, thus potentially affecting the central nervous system. Therefore, risk assessment and response strategies for Ag2Se QDs are important. The adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework makes it possible to develop risk management strategies based on toxicity mechanisms. In this study, using the AOP framework, we constructed causal mechanism relationship diagrams at different biological levels of Ag2Se QD neurotoxicity. In this framework, excess mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) triggered Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation in microglia was molecular initiation event (MIE). Proinflammatory mediator secretion and microglia activation were key events (KEs) at the cellular level. Neuroinflammation and neuronal damage were KEs at the organ/tissue level. Altered hippocampal physiology was the adverse outcome (AO) at the individual level. Based on the established AOP framework, further studies confirmed that mtROS-activated nuclear-factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1)- mitophagy contributed to weaken the MIE. Molecular docking-assisted molecular biology experiments demonstrated that quercetin (Qu) enhanced this process. This article emphasizes the importance of the AOP in the risk management of nanomaterials. Furthermore, this paper guides the use of natural small-molecule drugs as a strategy to mitigate nanomaterial-induced neurotoxicity.

Alkylnitriles, N≡CR with R as a long alkyl chain with 11–17 carbons, are introduced for synthesizing and stabilizing Ag2Se nanocrystals (NCs). Their intermediate bonding strength─stronger than alkylamines yet weaker than thiols─enables synthesis of monodisperse monoclinic Ag2Se NCs in a large size range (3–20 nm) at 120–140 °C. AgNO3 dissolved in N≡CR and Se-trioctylphosphine dissolved in NH2Ol are respectively introduced as the silver and selenium precursors, which effectively avoid formation of the Ag0 phase. Given the large excess of alkylamines in the synthesis, the native surface ligands on the as-synthesized NCs are dominated by dynamic and weak NH2Ol ligands, which can be readily replaced by relatively strong and stable N≡CR ligands at ambient temperatures. Unlike NH2Ol-coated Ag2Se NCs, N≡CR-coated ones have high phase (monoclinic) and electronic (either doped or undoped) stabilities, offering two series of Ag2Se NCs for either the short-wavelength or middle infrared window. The findings here indicate that specifically designed surface ligands not only ensure colloidal stability during synthesis and processing but also confer the desired phase and electronic stability to NCs, which may otherwise remain metastable when inappropriate ligands are used.
