Electrocaloric (EC) refrigeration offers a promising alternative to conventional vapor-compression systems by eliminating greenhouse‑gas refrigerants and achieving high efficiency through reversible polarization switching. In this work, Ba 0.9 Sr 0.1 Ti 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 3 – x wt% MnO 2 ( x = 0–0.4) (BSZT) ceramics were prepared by the solid‑state sintering method to investigate the effects of MnO 2 doping on the phase structure, microstructure, ferroelectric properties, and EC performance. During the sintering process, MnO 2 doping not only provides a sintering‑aid effect, but also generates oxygen vacancies ( V O •• ) due to the substitution of Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ for Ti 4+ . As a result, the defect dipoles Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ - V O •• , together with the sintering‑aid effect, promote grain growth. Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ were further suggested to occupy the B sites and increase the cation disorder, which tailors the relaxor behavior and electrical properties. As a result, the maximum polarization ( P max ) under 60 kV/cm increases from 18.2 μC/cm² to 20.2 μC/cm² at a MnO 2 content of 0.3 wt%. An adiabatic temperature change Δ T max of 1.41 K was achieved at 60 kV/cm. However, excessive MnO 2 doping suppresses grain growth and deteriorates the ferroelectric and EC properties. Therefore, the appropriate introduction of MnO 2 into BSZT is an effective strategy for enhancing EC performance.

The design of durable and efficient non-precious metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for advancing fuel cell and metal–air battery technologies. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted significant attention owing to their high activity and atom utilization efficiency. However, conventional Fe–N–C SACs suffer from Fenton-related side reactions, while traditional carbon supports are susceptible to oxidative degradation under high potentials. Herein, we report a Mn single-atom catalyst (Mn–N–D) anchored on a partially graphitized sp 2 /sp 3 carbon support derived from low-cost industrial diamond. The partial transformation of the sp³ carbon surface into sp² carbon generates conductive domains that stabilize atomically dispersed Mn–N 4 moieties. The optimized Mn–N–D catalyst exhibits enhanced alkaline ORR performance, delivering a half-wave potential of 0.831 V vs. RHE. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) analyses reveal the pyridinic-N-coordinated Mn–N 4 configuration serves as the primary active site, facilitating O–O bond cleavage and promoting the four-electron reaction pathway. This work provides a cost-effective strategy for constructing high-performance SACs through the synergistic integration of robust sp 3 carbon with conductive sp 2 carbon domains.

Norfloxacin (NOR) is widely used in aquaculture; however, its overuse has been shown to cause water pollution. In this research, NOR was chosen as the target pollutant, and agricultural waste, specifically corn cobs, was used to prepare ferromagnetic iron-manganese composite modified biochar (FMBC) for adsorbing NOR from aquaculture wastewater. The adsorption mechanism was explored using various characterization techniques and evaluating the adsorption performance. The results indicate that the optimal modification conditions for FMBC include an iron source concentration of 0.3 M, the iron-manganese ratio is 3:1, with a calcination temperature of 350°C. At pH 6, FMBC achieved an adsorption capacity of 31.17 mg/g for NOR, which is approximately 85.5% and 49.14% higher than that of pristine biochar (BC) and iron-modified biochar (FBC), respectively. The adsorption process obeyed pseudo-second order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. As the temperature increased, the adsorption capacity of FMBC for NOR decreased. The adsorption capacity of FMBC for NOR increased at low concentrations of Cu 2+ (maximum 25 mg/L), but at higher concentrations, it was inhibited. FMBC demonstrated the capacity to maintain NOR removal performance at a rate of greater than 50% following five cycles. The adsorption processes of FMBC for NOR are driven by several factors: pore filling, electrostatic adsorption, hydrogen bonding, surface complexation, π-π interactions, and hydrophobic bonding. In summary, this novel composite material offers promising prospects for mitigating water pollution in aquaculture, making it a cost-effective and sustainable alternative.

Li-rich Mn-based oxide (LRMO) represents a promising cathode for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its superior energy density. However, its widespread commercialization is hampered by severe capacity fade, voltage decay, and inferior rate performance. Herein, modification of LRMO with Li 3 PO 4 (LPO) is achieved by a novel one-step strategy that seamlessly integrates freeze-drying with subsequent calcination in air. Crucially, this LPO significantly enhances lithium-ion diffusion kinetics without altering the bulk crystal structure. The optimized cathode with a 3 wt% LPO delivers superior cycling stability, with a remarkable capacity retention of 67.8% after 600 cycles at 1C and 25 °C, significantly outperforming the blank cathode (54.9%). It also exhibits outstanding rate capability (102.9 mAh g −1 at 10C) and long-term cyclability (58.0% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 3C). Furthermore, the practical applicability is further demonstrated under a 1.5C/0.5C protocol and in a full cell with a Si@C anode. This work provides a scalable synthesis route, advancing the development of practical high-energy LRMO cathodes.

Developing bioactive piezoelectric ceramics that simultaneously provide electromechanical stimulation and osteogenic regulation remains a major challenge in bone repair. Here, Mn-doped bioactive glass/SrTiO 3 (BG-STO) composite ceramics were fabricated via solid-state sintering to establish a defect-engineered piezoelectric platform with enhanced bioactivity. Structural analyses confirmed SrTiO 3 as the primary phase, while BG incorporation induced grain refinement, lattice distortion, and secondary phase formation. XPS results revealed increased oxygen vacancies and Ti 3+ content, indicating defect-dipole-mediated polarization. The piezoelectric coefficient reached a maximum of ∼1.4 pC/N at 20 wt% BG, accompanied by stable electrical output, reflecting a balance between polarization enhancement and conductivity screening. Biological assays demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and sustained promotion of stem cell proliferation driven by bioactive ion release. These findings highlight BG-STO ceramics as promising candidates for synergistic electromechanical-biochemical modulation in bone regeneration.

Dual single-atom catalysts (DACs) provide an efficient clue to conquer the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reactions in Zn-air batteries (ZABs). However, the precise modulation on local microenvironment of DACs sites are still challenging. Herein, we report a defect-driven strategy to manipulate the microenvironment of Fe/Mn dual atomic sites that anchor on a carbon nanofiber (def-FeMn/CNF). Theoretical calculation results reveal that the defects modulate the local microenvironment of dual atom sites, which decreases the energy barrier and enhances the catalytic behaviors. Finite element analysis (FEA) modeling results demonstrate the porous carbon nanofiber is beneficial to mass transports and ensures fast kinetics. Benefitting from both aspects of advantages, the def-FeMn/CNF catalyst displays the superior pH-universal electrocatalytic properties, fast kinetics, and high stability. It exhibits the half-wave potentials of 0.92 V and 0.87 V in alkaline and acidic conditions, which outperform the FeMn-DAC/CNF, N–FeMn/CNF, Fe-SAC/CNF, and Mn-SAC/CNF reference samples. Moreover, the full Zn-air battery (ZABs) with def-FeMn/CNF cathode shows the high power densities of 295 W kg −1 and high stability over long-term (1000 h) cycling. Furthermore, the quasi-solid-state Zn-air batteries achieve a smooth operation over a wide-temperature range and a long-term (800 h) operational stability at curved state. Therefore, the defect-driven approach provides an efficient strategy to manipulate the local microenvironment of DACs for boosted catalytic properties. Moreover, it also gives a new clue to design and fabrication of pH-universal electrocatalysts towards diverse working conditions. Lead-free [(Ba0.85Ca0.15)1−1.5xNdx][(Zr0.1Ti0.9)0.995Mn0.005]O3(x mol% Nd/Mn BCZT, x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 mol%) ceramics were prepared by the traditional solid-state reaction method, in which the synergistic effects of sintering temperature and Nd/Mn co-doping on the phase structure, microstructural evolution, and electrical properties were systematically investigated. All ceramics exhibit a pure perovskite structure, with the tetragonal (P4mm) phase dominating at room temperature as confirmed by the X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement. The sintering temperature (1475–1520 °C) is found to be the primary factor governing densification and grain growth, with the relative density peaking at 91.7% for the x = 0.5 mol% sample sintered at 1505 °C. Within this optimized processing window, increasing the Nd content induces a gradual migration of the Curie temperature (TC) toward lower temperatures, accompanied by enhanced relaxor behavior. A highlight of this work is the strategic balance between piezoelectric activity and mechanical quality factor through a “donor–acceptor” co-doping mechanism. Specifically, for the x = 0.5 mol% ceramics, an exceptionally high mechanical quality factor (Qm= 424.5) is achieved for samples sintered at 1490 °C, which is proposed to be associated with the temperature-modulated formation of

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIMH) glass combines advantages such as low preparation temperature, high optical transparency, and abundant structural flexibility, making it a promising candidate for high-performance X-ray imaging. However, the recrystallization-induced devitrification hinders its long-term application. Therefore, developing OIMH glass with both high scintillation performance and excellent glass-forming ability remains an important challenge. In this work, we employ a synergistic Mn/Zn bimetallic engineering strategy to enhance the scintillation performance of Mn-based glass by increasing the Mn–Mn distance, improving X-ray absorption ability, and promoting optical transparency. The incorporation of a dimethylamine group onto the phosphonium cation endows (BDMAP) 2 Mn x Zn 1-x Br 4 (BDMAP = benzyl (4-(N, N-dimethylamino) phenyl) diphenylphosphonium) with high glass-transition temperatures (T g >87°C). The optimized (BDMAP) 2 Mn 0.3 Zn 0.7 Br 4 transparent luminescent OIMH glass shows a high light yield (LY) of 18 315 photons/MeV, a low limit of detection (LOD) of 85.05 nGy/s, and an outstanding spatial resolution of 20 lp/mm. Notably, (BDMAP) 2 Mn 0.3 Zn 0.7 Br 4 glass shows no crystallization even after heating at 100°C for 21 weeks, demonstrating strong resistance to recrystallization. This study presents a rational design route for regulating the scintillation performance of OIMH glasses with high stability.

The structural integrity of layered VOPO 4 frameworks critically determines their electrochemical performance in aqueous zinc-ion batteries, yet the highly ordered stacking of VOPO 4 renders it susceptible to lattice stress accumulation and chemo-mechanical degradation during cycling, causing rapid capacity fading and a shortened battery lifespan. Herein, we show a strategy to alleviate these limitations through partial metal substitution in the VOPO 4 lattice, enabling the modulation of local coordination environments and mitigating lattice and cycling induced stress. As a proof-of-concept, theoretical calculations and experimental validation on Mn-substituted VOPO 4 reveal shortened M–O bond along the c-axis and the formation of Mn–O–P–O–V delocalized structure. These modifications introduce subtle lattice distortions and generate percolation channels that enable more facile, ordered Zn 2+ migration, facilitating uniform lattice stress distribution. Real-time monitoring of interfacial stress during cycling identifies that Mn incorporation induces electronic redistribution and lattice anisotropy, promoting balanced intra-layer (a/b-axis) stress accommodation. Therefore, Mn-substituted VOPO 4 exhibits higher specific capacity and cycling stability, with 91.0% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . This intra-layer anisotropy engineering strategy offers a practical route for mitigating dissolution and strain effects during cycling, paving ways for the development of high-energy-density positive electrodes with cycling durability.

This study systematically investigated the characterization of 2Fe-CDs/12Mn-CeO2composites and the colorimetric sensing properties of H2O2, glucose (Glu), and glutathione (GSH). The morphology, structure, and optical properties of the 2Fe-CDs/12Mn-CeO2composite were analyzed in detail by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy, and its formation was supported by multiple complementary characterization techniques. The catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) of the nanozyme is 152-fold higher than natural HRP under optimal conditions and remains 59-fold higher even after temperature normalization to 25 °C. In the colorimetric sensing experiments, the detection limits of Fe-CDs/Mn-CeO2were 0.21 μM, 2.7 μM, and 0.63 μM for H2O2, Glu, and GSH, respectively. Rapid and accurate determination of the concentrations of these biomolecules can be achieved by observing the color changes after Fe-CDs/Mn-CeO2reaction with the objects to be measured. The experimental results show that Fe-CDs/Mn-CeO2have high sensitivity and selectivity for H2O2, Glu, and GSH, which provides a solid theoretical and experimental basis for the application of Fe-CDs/Mn-CeO2in the field of biosensing and medical diagnosis.

Spent NMC532 cathode is upcycled into an electrocatalyst for water splitting. • CEC leaching enables over 94% recovery of Li, Ni, Mn, and Co from NMC532. • RNMC-S@NF reaches 4 A cm −2 with overpotential of 539 mV for OER and 414 mV for HER. • OER catalysed by RNMC-S@NF follows a LOM mechanism. • Conventional and MOR-assisted OWS reach 4 A cm −2 at 1.98 and 1.60 V, respectively. The disposal of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is emerging as a serious environmental issue due to the rapid expansion of electric vehicle market. Current recycling routes typically involve recovery of metals as separate metal salts but rarely convert them directly into functional materials, leaving a largely unmet opportunity for value-added utilization of recovered battery metals. In this work, a sustainable strategy is presented for converting spent LIB cathodes into a high-performance, bifunctional electrocatalyst. Briefly, contact electrocatalysis induced metal leachate solution from LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 was directly used as a metal source along with thiourea to obtain a hierarchical 3D micro-flower sulfide supported on nickel foam (RNMC-S@NF) via hydrothermal process. The optimized RNMC-S@NF catalyst exhibits exciting electrocatalytic activity, requiring overpotentials of 240/539 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 107/414 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to reach 0.1/4 A cm −2 , respectively. In addition, a symmetrical 2-electrode (RNMC-S@NF||RNMC-S@NF) device requires a low cell voltage of 1.98 V to deliver industrial-scale current density of 4 A cm −2 , significantly outperforming commercial benchmarks of RuO 2 @NF||Pt/C@NF. RNMC-S@NF also shows high activity toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and an MOR-assisted water splitting electrolyzer achieves 4 A cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.60 V, demonstrating energy-saving hydrogen generation together with high-value formate production. This work not only establishes a scalable route from spent LIBs to industrial-scale green hydrogen, but also offers mechanistic insight into lattice-oxygen-driven OER catalysis and practical guidance for circular-economy battery-recycling policy. The polarization–breakdown trade-off is broken in SBLTMO thin films. • P r is suppressed while P max and breakdown strength are enhanced. • Leakage mechanisms and defect activation energy are tailored via defect-chemistry regulation. • A high W rec of 131.1 J/cm 3 with 74% efficiency is achieved. Achieving high energy storage performance in dielectric thin films requires both a high breakdown strength and large polarization difference between maximum and remanent polarization. Although Aurivillius-phase ferroelectrics offer excellent fatigue resistance and high breakdown tolerance, their pronounced ferroelectric hysteresis narrows this polarization difference, especially under high electric fields where intensified leakage conduction further broadens the polarization hysteresis. Herein, to overcome this limitation, Mn-doped SrBi 4.76 La 0.24 Ti 4.5 Mg 0.5 O 18 Aurivillius thin films are designed to realize synergistic breakdown enhancement and polarization regulation. Mn incorporation induces local tensile lattice strain, leading to increased maximum polarization. Meanwhile, leakage current is effectively reduced after Mn doping, and remanent polarization decreases because of the weakened contributions from leakage current and irreversible domain switching, thereby achieving effective polarization regulation. Analysis of leakage-conduction mechanisms reveals that Mn incorporation extends the electric-field range dominated by Ohmic and trap-filled-limited conduction before the onset of rapidly increasing leakage under high electric field, thereby enhancing breakdown strength. Consequently, the optimized Mn-doped SBLTMO thin film achieves a recoverable energy density of 131.1 J/cm 3 and an efficiency of 74.0% under 4.5 MV/cm, together with excellent frequency, thermal, and cycling stability. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of rational defect design in coupling breakdown enhancement with polarization regulation for high-performance Aurivillius dielectric thin films.
