The rhenium–osmium (Re–Os) isotopic system has emerged as a widely utilized tool in cosmochemistry and high-temperature geochemical studies. A critical prerequisite for high-precision Os isotope analysis via Negative Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (N-TIMS) involves achieving complete isotopic equilibrium between the sample and spike through the isotope dilution technique. In this study, we present an innovative technique to address valence state disparities in Os species within mixed solutions, thereby enabling effective isotopic equilibration through a chemical reducing reaction with a strong reductant under ambient conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that a solution containing 0.05 mol L−1 hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH·HCl) coupled with 0.01 mol L−1 HBr effectively stabilizes a nanogram-level Os mass. Systematic optimization of reductant concentration and sample-to-reductant ratio yielded a mean 190Os/188Os value of 1.2280 ± 0.0006 (2s, n = 18) for a mixed Os spike solution, closely aligned with the recommended value of 1.2278 ± 0.0003 (2s, n = 12) obtained through the conventional Carius tube method. Controlled comparative experiments revealed critical considerations for method implementation: (1) a freshly prepared reductant must be employed immediately to ensure reagent efficacy, and (2) precise absolute volume control of the reductant solution is essential to mitigate potential losses of volatile OsO4 linked to extended decomposition times. This novel approach successfully achieves isotopic equilibration between sample–spike and inter-spike components under ambient conditions, offering significant analytical advantages over traditional methods. The validity of the proposed approach was demonstrated by analyzing reference material WMS-1a yielding a 187Os/188Os value of 0.1665 ± 0.0006 (2s, n = 5), which agrees within uncertainty with the established value of 0.1664 ± 0.0003 (2s, n = 5) obtained via the Carius tube method. The protocol enhances operational efficiency by reducing equilibration time and explosive risk, and decreases procedural Os blanks via reducing material and reagent consumption. The combined improvements in precision, cost-effectiveness, and methodological flexibility position this technique as a valuable advancement in Os isotope geochemistry.

Low charge separation efficiency remains a key bottleneck limiting the performance of photocatalysts. In this study, we propose a novel van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction photocatalyst—ReS 2 supported on S-doped porous carbon nitride nanosheets (denoted as ReS 2 @CNS)—synthesized via a pre-coordination confinement strategy. This work introduces an innovative integration of interface engineering and band structure modulation to simultaneously promote spatial charge separation and extend visible light absorption. The novelty lies in the rational design of the vdW heterojunction interface, which not only facilitates efficient migration of photogenerated electrons by suppressing charge recombination, but also leverages ReS 2 as a high-efficiency electron acceptor. The resulting composite demonstrates significantly enhanced multifunctional photocatalytic performance, achieving an H 2 evolution rate of 5693.04 μmol g −1 h −1 (3.8 times that of CNS), a CO generation rate of 63.17 μmol g −1 h −1 (approximately 3.0 times that of CNS), and an H 2 O 2 production rate of 200.70 μmol g −1 h −1 . This study pioneers a synergistic approach by combining vdW heterojunction construction with targeted electron acceptor design, providing a new paradigm for the development of high-performance, multifunctional photocatalysts and offering valuable theoretical and practical insights for solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

The concentration and type of surface-adsorbed oxygen are critical determinants of gas-sensing performance. Rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ), a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) with a thickness-independent direct bandgap, has garnered considerable attention as a promising material for high-performance gas sensors due to its high carrier mobility and concentration. In this work, an improved rhenium-tellurium eutectic growth method for ReS 2 synthesis is proposed. Furthermore, the type and concentration of surface-adsorbed oxygen on the ReS 2 film were modulated through a combined approach of H 2 annealing and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) solution immersion. This surface modification strategy enabled the fabrication of an ReS 2 -based sensor exhibiting a low detection limit of 0.0219 ppm for hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and exceptional resistance to humidity interference, offering a novel route for the design of TMD-based gas sensors.

To enable fast sodium ion battery charging in a wide temperature range, the local structures of anode materials must be optimized to reduce the Na + diffusion resistance at the interface and inside the electrode. Guided by theoretical predictions, isotropic ReSe 2 with a 1 T phase crystal structure (1 T ReSe 2 ) is developed herein to exhibit enhanced electrical conductivity for efficient charge transfer compared to the 1 T' ReSe 2 phase. Enabled by its metallic characteristic and longer Re─Se bonds, 1 T ReSe 2 achieves a lower Na + diffusion barrier and lower adsorption energy than 1 T' ReSe 2 , facilitating faster Na + storage reaction kinetics. Operando spectroscopy characterization confirms that the 1 T ReSe 2 electrode can directly produce Na x ReSe 2 without undergoing a significant phase transition. This inhibits volume expansion, leading to improved cycling stability. As a result, 1 T ReSe 2 exhibits good fast-charging performance in a wide temperature range. A capacity of 197 mAh g −1 @20 A g −1 is maintained after 8000 cycles at room temperature, and a capacity of 136 mAh g −1 @1 A g −1 (corresponding to a capacity retention rate of 60%) is retained after 465 cycles at −40°C.

Mo doping optimizes the electronic structure of ReS2. MoxRe(1–x)S2/MoS2 alloy heterojunction exhibits more favorable application prospects in photodetection due to its higher electrical conductivity than ReS2/MoS2 heterojunction. However, alloy heterojunctions are difficult to prepare controllably using conventional vapor-phase chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and the heterojunction growth mechanism remains unclear. Here, a vapor–liquid–solid temperature-gradient process is proposed to grow alloy heterojunctions within predeposited molten Mo precursor droplets. The sulfuration reaction between Re diffusing into the droplet and Mo atoms facilitates the formation of alloy structures. The growth temperatures TRe and TMo in the temperature-gradient significantly affect the growth patterns and morphology evolution of the heterojunction. The MoS2 morphology in vertical alloy heterojunctions becomes triangular as the growth temperature increases. The dimension of the top MoxRe(1–x)S2 alloy is positively correlated with the Re diffusion concentration. Moreover, lateral alloy heterojunctions and single alloys are formed at lower and higher growth temperature differences between TRe and TMo, respectively. These results provide a controllable strategy for the synthesis of isotropic/anisotropic van der Waals TMDC heterojunctions.

The intrinsic electronic and structural properties of the transition metal rhenium (Re) endow it with substantial application potential in electrocatalysis. However, the high cost of Re requires the development of Re-based materials to reduce cost and optimize the performance at the same time. Herein, a one-step high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) synthetic strategy is proposed for fabricating Re-C phase gradient composites, presenting a facile and efficient pathway to develop high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. By studying the structural evolution of Re toward ReC and uncovering its intrinsic mechanism, the regulation of the material’s electrocatalytic activity was successfully realized. Experimental results confirm that HPHT conditions of 5 GPa and 1400 °C effectively induce the formation of multiple crystalline phases of Re-C solid solution and ReC in the Re-C composite. These phases have coherent phase boundaries and form the phase gradient composites. Compared with element Re, the synergistic effect of phase gradient composites broadens the electronic state range by increasing electron transfer from Re to C in ReC (increasing the binding energy) and reduces the binding energy in Re-C solid solution. The broad electronic states range in the phase gradient composites exhibits optimal HER overpotentials of 150 mV (acidic electrolyte) and 166 mV (alkaline electrolyte) at 10 mA cm−2. These findings provide a promising strategy to boost catalysts’ electrocatalytic performance via constructing phase gradient composites.

Two-dimensional (2D) ReS 2 has received widespread attention because of its unique anisotropic properties, weak interlayer interactions and broad application prospects. Therefore, the controllable and repeatable growth of 2D ReS 2 flakes is very important for studying their properties and practical applications. In this work, 2D single-crystalline ReS 2 flakes with different layer numbers were synthesized on mica substrates using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) by adjusting the distance between the mica substrate and Re source, and the growth mechanism was further discussed. The fluorescence quenching effect and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect of 2D ReS 2 flakes were investigated using rhodamine B (RhB), crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) dye molecules as Raman probes. The results show that the fluorescence quenching effect and SERS effect of 2D ReS 2 flakes are enhanced with decreasing layer number. The lowest detection limits on monolayer ReS 2 flake substrates are 10 −10 M, 10 −9 M and 10 −8 M for RhB, CV and MG under 532 nm laser excitation, respectively. 2D ReS 2 flakes used as a sensitive SERS-active substrate have excellent uniformity and stability. The surface Raman enhancement mechanism of 2D ReS 2 flakes was discussed.

A bulk ultrafine-grained (UFG) W-ZrC-Re alloy is fabricated via a developed bottom-up powder metallurgy process. The detailed fabrication processes including the mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering have been introduced. The relative density of this UFG W-ZrC-Re is as high as 99.5 %, and the average grain size is about 0.4 μm and uniform dispersion particles with the average particle size of ∼28 nm and number density of 1.48 × 10 21 /m 3 . The W-ZrC-Re exhibits high thermal stability that maintains its UFG microstructures as well as a high hardness (∼740 HV) even after annealing at 1500 °C for 1 h. This high thermal stability is attributed to the synergistic effects of the nano-sized ZrC particle pinning and Re solute drag, which demonstrates a good potential in the manufacturing of high-stabled UFG and even nanocrystalline W materials.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides materials have recently been explored as possible substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). However, in comparison to the conventional noble-metal-based counterpart, most of the 2D materials have very small area for SERS measurement, which is a big limitation toward practical applications. Herein, we presented our study of SERS using substrate-scale continuous ReS 2 monolayer films on flexible mica substrate. We demonstrated that the charge transfer between the target molecules and the atomically thin ReS 2 can be modulated by the underlying substrate of ReS 2 , resulting in greatly different suppressing level of FL background. Kelvin probe force microscopy revealed a large difference of surface potential between ReS 2 /SiO 2 and ReS 2 /mica, suggesting that the strong FL quenching of molecular on ReS 2 /mica might be attributed to the inert surface of layered mica. The large-area ReS 2 monolayer films on mica show a detection limit of R6G molecule around 10 −7 M and a robust SERS performance after an exposure in air for one month and repeated bending for 1000 times. Our work explores the practical application of 2D ReS 2 for molecular detection via SERS technique.
