Recycling solid waste as functional materials is important for both environmental remediation and resource recycling. This study attempts to recycle spent Cu/Fe layered double hydroxide (Cu/Fe-LDH) which is generated from the adsorption of dyes by converting to Cr(VI) reductant and porous carbon material. Results showed that the obtained reductant was mainly composed of Fe 0 and Cu 0 , and exhibited good reductive activity toward Cr(VI). The species of Fe 0 , Fe 2+ , Cu 0 , and Cu + all favored the reduction of Cr(VI) according to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. During Cr(VI) removal, solution pH could increase to neutral which caused the metal ions to precipitate near completion. On the other hand, the spent Cu/Fe-LDH could be employed to produce porous carbon materials, and the generated waste metals solution herein could be reused for LDH synthesis. Specific surface areas of the obtained carbon materials varied from 141.3–744.2 m 2 /g with changes in adsorbed amount of dyes on the LDH. This study illustrates that all the components of wastes can be useful resources, offering a simple recycling approach for similar organic-inorganic solid wastes. This work also enlightens us that designing a proper initial product is crucial to make waste recycling simpler.

The ease of agglomeration reduced the removal of pollutants by FeS particles. Hence, sludge biochar was employed as a support to produce FeS-loaded biochar composites (FeS@BC) using a solvothermal method, for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater. The performance and mechanism of Cr(VI) removal on FeS@BC were investigated through adsorption experiments and characterization techniques. The adsorption tests revealed that under optimal conditions of solution pH of 3 and dosage of 40 mg, FeS@BC achieved a removal efficiency of over 97 % for 50 mg/L Cr(VI). The presence of Cl - and NO - 3 did not affect Cr(VI) removal, whereas sulfate, phosphate, and carbonate inhibited the removal process. Low concentrations of humic acid (1–5 mg/L) held a negligible influence on removing, but elevated concentrations of humic acid inhibited Cr(VI) removal. The behavior of FeS@BC in removing Cr(VI) complied with to the pseudo-second-order and the Langmuir model. At 308.15 K, the largest removal capability of FeS@BC for Cr(VI) reached 185.874 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies confirmed that the Cr(VI) removing processes on FeS@BC were a spontaneous, entropy-driven, endothermic chemical adsorption. The primary mechanism for removing Cr(VI) on FeS@BC included reduction, electrostatic adsorption, complexation, and precipitation, with the reduction process playing a crucial role. This indicated that sludge biochar loaded with FeS was an ideal material for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater.

We developed a feasible strategy to obtain the defective MIL-100(Cr) (De-M) via doping 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate and subsequently loaded polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) by thermal deposition to obtain a hydrophobic MOFs composite (De-M@PDVB). De-M 10 (10 % defective ligand/total ligands) exhibited excellent performance for the capture of toluene due to uniform particle size, high specific surface area and pore volume. Subsequent thermal deposition with PDVB further increased the hydrophobicity, as-obtained De-M 10 @PDVB in the dynamic adsorption experiment showed about 2 and 1.5 time adsorption capacity as that of primary MIL-100(Cr) and De-M 10 under 50 % RH at 298 K. In addition, the toluene uptake of De-M 10 @PDVB (0.95, 298 K) in static adsorption experiments was 1320 mg/g, much higher than many reported MOFs. Furthermore, De-M 10 @PDVB could be regenerated at 378 K, demonstrating its excellent regenerability at low temperature. The adsorption mechanism of toluene on De-M 10 @PDVB could be attribute to the π-π stacking interaction between the benzene ring of toluene with H 3 BTC and adsorption sites offered by the incorporation of H 2 DL in the framework of MIL-100(Cr) according to XPS analysis. Our finding provided a novel strategy by constructing defective MIL-100(Cr) and introducing PDVB to enhance efficient adsorption for toluene capture even in humid air.

Organic dyes pollution has caused significant threat to flora, fauna and humans because the toxic of dyes. In this work, with the help of acetic acid as a defect initiator, the hierarchical porous MIL-101(HP-MIL-101) has been synthesized and used for removing anionic dyes Eosin y (EY), Methyl orange (MO), Congo red (CR) and Acid fuchsin (AF) from water. Due to its positive surface charge, larger specific surface area, well-matched pore structure, and the charge, size, and diameter of dyes, HP-MIL-101 showed rapid adsorption and an excellent maximum adsorption capacity of 425 and 336 mg⋅g − 1 for CR and AF, respectively. A series of batch experiments were carried out to investigate the impact of various key factors, including adsorption duration, initial dye concentration, and temperature. In addition, the kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics about the adsorption properties were also discussed. In addition, HP-MIL-101 showed stable and high reusability for at least three cycles, with an efficiency of over 95% without significant structural changes. This study highlights the potential of hierarchical porous MOF for mitigating dye pollution and advancing sustainable water treatment methodologies.

A three-dimensional porous aerogel was synthesized by combining soft chitosan oligosaccharide to hard multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) under mild conditions. Owing to the support of MWCNTs, mesopores can be detected on the inner surfaces of the aerogel. The cross-linking by tetraethylenepentamine forms a macropore structure after freeze drying, using water as the template. The hydrogel can bear 30% recoverable compression with the aid of hydrogen bonds between the amide groups. The aerogel exhibits excellent adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI) in water. The adsorption capacity can reach 367.6 mg/g within 100 min. Notably, the aerogel demonstrated an extremely high efficiency in removal for trace Cr(VI). Soluble Cr(VI) of 1 mg/L can be completely removed by the aerogel at a dosage of 0.2 g/L. This work provides a new strategy to synthesize adsorbents with hierarchical pores that exhibit high porosity and a fast mass transfer rate.

In this work, ultrasonic-assisted laser cladding technology was employed to fabricate shape memory alloy (SMA) coatings composed of Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni on the surface of 304 stainless steel. Both experimental and simulated results unequivocally demonstrate a substantial improvement in both microhardness and wear resistance of the metal surface. Subsequently, a superhydrophobic coating with an “armor-like” structure was comprehensively prepared by integrating femtosecond laser (FSL) and nano SiO 2 spray-coating techniques. The creation of this microstructure on the coating surface efficiently facilitated the high-efficiency embedding of nano SiO 2 particles. Notably, the modified SMA coating exhibited stable superhydrophobic properties and exceptional corrosion resistance. This research not only provides novel approaches and methods for the preparation and modification of Fe-based memory alloy coatings but also highlights potential applications in the corrosion-resistant field. The work offers valuable insights for researchers in the field of materials science, emphasizing the synergistic effects of ultrasound-assisted laser cladding technology, femtosecond laser, and nano SiO 2 spraying techniques. It provides robust support for the development of new functional coatings.

In this work, intelligent pH-sensitive sensors (Fe3O4/RhB@PAM) for Cr(VI) detection were successfully synthesized based on polyacrylamide (PAM) and Rhodamine B (RhB) co-modified Fe3O4 nanocomposites. The characterization results indicated that the sensors had many favorable properties, including suitable size, stable crystal structure and excellent magnetic response performance (47.59 emu g−1). In addition, the fluorescence changes during the detection process indicated that Fe3O4/RhB@PAM were “ON–OFF” intelligent sensors. When the Fe3O4/RhB@PAM sensors were placed in acidic Cr(VI) solution (pH 4), PAM acted as a pH-responsive “gatekeeper” releasing RhB, and the fluorescence intensity of released RhB was weakened by the complexation of Cr(VI). Furthermore, the fluorescence changes of the magnetic sensors were remarkably specific for Cr(VI) even in the presence of other competitive cations, and the limit of detection (LOD) for Cr(VI) was lower (0.347 μM) than the value recommended by the World Health Organization (0.96 μM). All the results presented in this study showed that the Fe3O4/RhB@PAM sensors had significant potential for Cr(VI) detection in acidic environmental samples.

The high integration of electronic devices severely hinders heat dissipation, impacting intelligent system performance. This study fabricated Cr-incorporated amorphous carbon films on aluminum alloy heat sinks using pulsed bias arc ion plating to enhance thermal performance. Film morphology and composition were analyzed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The Cr content was precisely regulated by adjusting the Cr target current, which was set at 0 A, 20 A, 40 A, and 60 A, respectively, and the effect of the sp 2 /sp 3 hybridization ratio on thermal dissipation was investigated. Results showed that increased Cr content led to the formation of B1-CrC in the amorphous carbon matrix. Optimal thermal performance occurred at a Cr target current of 20 A, at which the Cr content reached 6.21 at.%, yielding an infrared emissivity of 0.67 and a thermal conductivity of 160.95 W·m −1 ·K −1 . LED lamps coated with the Cr/C film exhibited a surface temperature 9.7 °C lower than that of uncoated lamps, thereby demonstrating excellent heat dissipation. The study underscores the synergistic effect of radial thermal conductivity and infrared emissivity in improving heat sink efficiency under non-forced convection.

Although molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has garnered significant interest as a potential catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), its poor intrinsic activity and few marginal active spots restrict its electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we successfully constructed a catalyst via a simple hydrothermal method by forming a heterostructure of MoS2 with Cr-doped nickel–iron hydroxide (NiFe LDH) to synthesize a MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst to significantly improve the OER catalytic performance. MoS2 plays a crucial function as an electron transport channel in the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH heterostructure, which increases the electron transport rate. Furthermore, a larger active surface area for NiFeCr LDH is provided by the ultrathin layered structure of MoS2, increasing the number of active sites and encouraging the OER. On the other hand, the introduction of Cr element increased the density of the catalytic center and provided additional Cr-OH active sites, which accelerated the oxygen decomposition reaction. These two factors act synergistically to improve the intrinsic structure of MoS2, increase the number of reactive sites, and dramatically enhance the OER catalytic performance. Excellent OER activity is demonstrated by the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst, which only needs an overpotential of 224 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec−1. The catalyst also demonstrated outstanding stability, with its activity practically holding steady after 48 h of testing. This work offers novel ideas for enhancing and designing MoS2-based OER catalysts, and it provides a crucial reference for research in the field of clean energy.

Persistent free radicals (PFRs) in biochar are an important electron shuttle for mediating electron transfer, which has significant impact on the biogeochemical redox reactions. Although the influence of biochar on the extracellular electron transfer (EET) for redox cycle has been extensively studied, the molecular mechanism for promoting the EET with PFRs remains poorly understood. This study investigated the oxygen-centered PFRs-mediated Cr(VI) reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1) and exhibited the molecular mechanism of electron transfer between flavin substances and PFRs. Results showed that the Cr(VI) bioreduction rate by MR-1 increased from 31% to 70% with the addition of biochar. Electrochemical results illustrated that biochar increased biocurrent generation in the Cr(VI) bioreduction process. 3D-EEM and LC/MS spectra indicated that MR-1 secreted the flavin mononucleotide (FMN) reductase that relied on the [H] to provide the electrons. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra illustrated that PFRs in biochar accepted the electrons from FMN reductase and stored those bioelectrons. Because of the oxidation of FMN, the electron transfer from FMN reductase to PFRs would increase the intracellular reactive oxygen species, which further produced the extracellular ·O 2 − . The reduced PFRs released the bioelectrons, accelerating the Cr(VI) reduction by ·O 2 − . Together with the results of the mutant strains experiment, it was found that the EET by c -cytochrome and free radicals contributed to the Cr(VI) bioreduction by 7.1% and 92.9%, respectively. These findings revealed that the PFRs could participate in the EET process and promote the redox reactions, providing a new approach for enhancing the remediation of heavy metal pollution by microorganisms and suggesting the important role of PFRs in the electron transfer process.

With the increasing use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), they will inevitably enter the environment intentionally or unintentionally. However, the effects of MOFs on plant growth are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of exposure of the rhizosphere to MOFs on plant growth. MIL-101(Cr) was selected as a research model due to its commercial availability and wide use. Soybean plants at the two-leaf stage were subjected to various durations (1–7 days) and concentrations (0–1000 mg/L) of exposure in hydroculture with a control group treated with ultrapure water. We found that MIL-101(Cr) had a positive effect on soybean growth at a lower dose (i.e., 200 mg/L); however, at higher doses (i.e., 500 and 1000 mg/L), it exhibited significant toxicity to plant growth, which is evidenced by leaf damage. To investigate the mechanism of this effect, we used Cr as an indicator to quantify, track, and image MIL-101(Cr) in the plant with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Results indicated that MIL-101(Cr) primarily accumulated in the cortex of roots (up to 40 times higher than that in stems), with limited translocation to stems and negligible presence in leaves and cotyledons. In addition, metabolomic analysis of soybeans indicated that low-dose MIL-101(Cr) could increase the sucrose content of soybean roots to promote plant growth, while a high dose could induce lipid oxidation in roots. This study provides valuable insights into the ecological toxicology of MOFs and underscores the importance of assessing their environmental impact for sustainable agricultural practices.

The mild, fast and green removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater has already attracted extensive attention due to the severe acute toxicity and carcinogenicity of Cr(VI). At present work, Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed by facile solvothermal assembly and in situ anion exchange methods for visible light-driven efficient photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI). The structure-activity relationship, photoelectrochemical properties, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the controllable construction of the heterostructure significantly expanded the light response range and remarkably enhanced the light absorption capacity. In particular, the unique charge transfer mechanism of this S-scheme heterojunction is conducive to promoting efficient separation of photogenerated charges and thus enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The results show that the total efficiency of Cr(VI) removal by the developed Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterojunction under visible light irradiation is 98.5% within 6 min, with a k value of 0.466 min −1 . This work provides a new route with enormous promise to construct bismuth-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for clean and efficient environmental remediation.
