3D-printed bioceramics derived from silicone resin are of great interest in bone tissue engineering owing to their simple processes and low cost. Herein, PCN-224, as a subclass of metal−organic frameworks (MOFs), is successfully fabricated and deposited on the surface of 3D-printed porous β-Ca 2 SiO 4 (C 2 S) scaffolds. The composite scaffolds possess uniform interconnected macropores (≈400 μm), with increased porosity and slower degradation. The results indicate that deposition of PCN-224 significantly promotes cell proliferation and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes. Moreover, the composite scaffolds significantly improve calvarial defect healing in rats, compared with C 2 S scaffolds. Therefore, the PCN-224-modified 3D-printed porous C 2 S composite scaffolds are promising candidates for bone tissue engineering.

Human pregnane X receptor (PXR) is critical for regulating the expression of key drug-metabolizing enzymes such as CYP3A and CYP2C. Our recent study revealed that treatment with rodent-specific PXR agonist pregnenolone-16α-carbonitrile (PCN) significantly induced hepatomegaly and promoted liver regeneration after two-thirds partial hepatectomy (PHx) in mice. However, it remains unclear whether PXR activation induces hepatomegaly and liver regeneration and simultaneously promotes metabolic function of the liver. Here, we investigated the metabolism activity of CYP1A2, CYP3A1/2 and CYP2C6/11 during PXR activation-induced liver enlargement and regeneration in rats after cocktail dosing of CYP probe drugs. For PCN-induced hepatomegaly, a notable increase in the metabolic activity of CYP3A1/2 and CYP2C6/11, as evidenced by the plasma exposure of probe substrates and the AUC ratios of the characteristic metabolites to its corresponding probe substrates. The metabolic activity of CYP1A2, CYP3A1/2 and CYP2C6/11 decreased significantly after PHx. However, PCN treatment obviously enhanced the metabolic activity of CYP2C6/11 and CYP3A1/2 in PHx rats. Furthermore, the protein expression levels of CYP3A1/2 and CYP2C6/11 in liver were up-regulated. Taken together, this study demonstrates that PXR activation not only induces hepatomegaly and liver regeneration in rats, but also promotes the protein expression and metabolic activity of the PXR downstream metabolizing enzymes such as CYP3A1/2 and CYP2C6/11 in the body.

A water resistant zirconium–porphyrin metal–organic framework PCN-222 was synthesized for selectively separating CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2. Isotherms of CO2, CH4, and N2 on PCN-222 at low and high pressures were respectively measured. At 298 K, CO2 uptakes at 100 and 3000 kPa were 1.16 and 13.67 mmol/g, respectively. At 298 K and 100 kPa, CO2/CH4 (50:50, v/v) and CO2/N2 (50:50, v/v) adsorption selectivities separately reached 4.3 and 73.7. At 298 K and 3000 kPa, CO2/CH4 (50:50, v/v) and CO2/N2 (50:50, v/v) adsorption selectivities were 4.7 and 32.8, respectively. Importantly, breakthrough experiments confirmed that PCN-222 could achieve the effective separation of CO2/CH4 (both 50:50 and 10:90) and CO2/N2 (both 50:50 and 15:85) gas mixtures. The dynamic regeneration experiments showed that PCN-222 maintained its initial CO2 adsorption capacity after five cycles of CO2 adsorption–desorption. This work suggested that PCN-222 was a potential candidate for selectively separating CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4.

Nanomaterial selection is critical for photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. In this report, a novel cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) strategy was proposed for the detection of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) and gentamicin sulfate (CN). The photocathode was synthesized by noncovalently coupling cadmium sulfide (CdS) to the porphyrin-derived metal–organic framework (CdS@PCN-224). This type of assembly created a pleasant interface for the combination of doxorubicin hydrochloride and gentamicin sulfate, resulting in a good CdS@PCN-224 donor–acceptor system. When compared to a single optoelectronic material, its photocurrent is enhanced by unprecedented nine times. This research could pave the way for the realization of PCN-224’s enormous potential in PEC sensing.

The PCN/CdS/CdIn 2 S 4 composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance for H 2 evolution, H 2 O 2 production and dye degradation. • Spontaneous interfacial band bending drives a dual Z-scheme pathway to preserve highly active photogenerated charge carriers. • The superoxide radicals (.•O 2 − ) is the primary species for both continuous H 2 O 2 generation and rapid pollutant decomposition. Addressing the escalating global energy and environmental crises demands efficient, sustainable, and robust technologies. In this study, a ternary composite PCN/CdS/CdIn 2 S 4 integrating phosphorus-doped carbon nitride (PCN), cadmium sulfide (CdS), and indium cadmium sulfide (CdIn 2 S 4 ) was rationally designed via a multi-step assembly process. The optimized heterojunction exhibits outstanding performance, achieving remarkable H 2 and H 2 O 2 production rates of 7614 and 6873 μmol∙g −1 h −1 , respectively. Additionally, it demonstrates ultra-fast degradation kinetics, mineralizing 99.4% of methyl orange within just 30 min. Mechanistically, spontaneous interfacial band bending drives a dual Z-scheme charge transfer pathway. This specific energy band alignment effectively preserves strongly reducing electrons and highly oxidizing holes while significantly suppressing charge carrier recombination. Furthermore, radical trapping confirms that superoxide radicals (∙O 2 − ) are the pivotal active species, driving a two-step single-electron reduction pathway (O 2 →∙O 2- →H 2 O 2 ) for continuous H 2 O 2 generation, and coupling synergistically with localized holes for rapid organic pollutant decomposition.

This photocatalyst was prepared using an ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method regulated by iodide ions. • The resultant Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/TP-PCN exhibits a flake-like structure enveloping the nanospheres. • The Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/TP-PCN exhibited an excellent H 2 evolution rate of 2.83 mmol g −1 h −1 in alkaline PET solution. • Photoreduction mechanism of Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/TP-PCN is proposed and analyzed. Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/TP-PCN nanocomposite photocatalysts were prepared via an ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal method regulated by iodide ions. The resulting composite features intimate interfacial contact and strong electronic coupling, generating a built-in electric field that promotes efficient charge separation and directional transfer while suppressing the photocorrosion of Zn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S. As a result, this composite exhibits an excellent hydrogen evolution rate of 2.83 mmol g −1 h −1 in an alkaline PET solution, which is approximately 4.7 times that of pure TP-PCN. Liquid-state NMR analysis confirms that PET is effectively degraded into small organic molecules such as methanol and formate, demonstrating efficient PET upcycling coupled with hydrogen production. Mechanistic investigations demonstrate that the reaction proceeds via a direct hole-driven oxidation pathway coupled with electron-mediated hydrogen evolution, consistent with a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This work provides a promising strategy for coupling plastic waste upcycling with sustainable hydrogen production, offering new insights into addressing both environmental and energy challenges. Diabetic wounds remain difficult to treat due to bacterial
resistance,
a localized weakly acidic microenvironment, imbalanced oxidative stress,
and poor dressing conformity. To address these challenges, this study
developed an injectable pH-responsive nanocomposite hydrogel using
phenylboronic acid-modified chitosan (PBCS), tannic acid (TA), and
porphyrinic metal–organic framework PCN-224 nanoparticles,
featuring with superior tissue adhesiveness, self-healing, and pH-responsiveness.
The hydrogel was fabricated using PBCS as the matrix and TA as the
cross-linker, establishing a dual-cross-linked network sustained by
dynamic boronate ester bonds and multiple hydrogen bonds, into which
the porphyrinic metal–organic framework (MOF) PCN-224 was subsequently
loaded. This hydrogel precisely senses and exploits the endogenous
weakly acidic microenvironment of the infected wound, triggering the
dissociation of boronate ester bonds to achieve the on-demand release
of TA, as well as the smart regulation of the network’s swelling
behavior. The synchronously released polyphenol component, TA, imparts
excellent antioxidant activity to scavenge excess free radicals and
re-establish oxidative stress balance. Meanwhile, under 660 nm laser
irradiation, PCN-224 generated reactive oxygen species and a mild
photothermal effect, enabling combined photodynamic and photothermal
antibacterial activity. Collectively, the PBCS-TA/PCN-224 nanocomposite
hydrogel integrates pH-responsive behavior, antioxidant activity,
and light-triggered antibacterial functionality, supporting its potential
application in infected diabetic wounds.

The increasing demand for lithium driven by the rapid growth of the new energy industry has highlighted the need for efficient lithium enrichment technologies. Forward osmosis (FO) membranes are considered suitable for lithium concentration because of their low energy consumption; however, conventional FO membranes suffer from low water permeability caused by the funnel effect and suboptimal separation layer structures. This study aims to enhance lithium enrichment performance by introducing photothermal porous coordination network (PCN-134-2D) nanosheet interlayers in membranes to regulate interfacial polymerization and promote structural optimization. PCN-134-2D nanosheets were deposited on the support layer and exposed to visible-light irradiation under varying light intensities during interfacial polymerization to increase the interface temperature. The increased temperature promoted gas release from the aqueous phase and induced in situ foaming, resulting in the formation of protruding structures in the separation layer. These structures increased surface roughness and internal nanovoids to mitigate the funnel effect. Moreover, the porphyrin-based PCN-134-2D nanosheets enhanced the interaction with m -phenylenediamine, facilitating the formation of a thin and dense polyamide layer. The resulting membrane exhibited a water flux of 36.43 L·m −2 ·h −1 and a reverse salt flux of 0.21 g·m −2 ·h −1 for FO mode, corresponding to 130.38 % and 89.51 % improvements, respectively, compared to the unmodified membrane. During lithium concentration tests, the membrane achieved a lithium concentration factor of 4.30 and a recovery rate of 96.38 %, representing improvements of 106.7 % and 13.5 % compared to the original membrane, respectively.

The misuse of antibiotics has resulted in multidrug resistance among bacteria, rendering nearly all conventional antibiotics ineffective and creating a pressing global need for highly efficient and broad-spectrum antibacterial alternatives. Photodynamic antibacterial therapy (PDAT) has emerged as a promising strategy to address bacterial resistance; however, its efficacy is limited by inherent challenges such as poor tissue penetration, short diffusion ranges, and brief half-lives of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we developed an antibacterial composite nanofiber membrane with red light responsiveness by incorporating functional l-arginine-modified PCN-224 nanoparticles (Arg-PCN NPs), which enabled NO-enhanced synergistic PDAT. Specifically, Arg-PCN NPs were synthesized and subsequently embedded into a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix by electrospinning, yielding a porous nanocomposite membrane (APM). Under irradiation, APM showed a strong synergistic antibacterial effect, and the bactericidal rate against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) reached 99.9%. Comprehensive mechanistic studies revealed that APM potently enhanced bacterial membrane permeability and elevated intracellular ROS levels upon irradiation. Furthermore, cytotoxicity assays confirmed that APM exhibited negligible in vitro cytotoxicity. The red light-activated antibacterial membrane developed in this work holds significant potential for wound care applications and provides a design strategy for advanced antibacterial materials capable of combating drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria significantly hinder wound healing, highlighting the need for non-antibiotic alternatives. Here, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel platform, LAMC@PCN-224@BBR, by incorporating photodynamic PCN-224 and the natural product berberine (BBR) into lipoic acid-modified chitosan (LAMC). This design combines photo-crosslinking for enhanced tissue adhesion with photodynamic therapy (PDT) for antimicrobial activity. Upon light irradiation, the hydrogel generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), effectively eradicating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) with an efficiency exceeding 99 %. Its excellent biocompatibility and adaptive adhesion allow conformal coverage of irregular wounds. In a full-thickness skin defect model, the hydrogel accelerated healing by suppressing inflammation, promoting collagen deposition, enhancing angiogenesis, and polarizing macrophages toward the pro-regenerative M2 phenotype. These findings demonstrate that the LAMC@PCN-224@BBR hydrogel is a promising clinical strategy for controlling resistant infections and promoting tissue regeneration.

Environmentally widespread endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA), have posed a risk to living things. Laccase, a kind of oxidoreductase, can effectively catalyze the degradation of phenolic compounds like BPA. Herein, a defective metal-organic framework (dPCN-224) with BPA adsorption capability was synthesized and used for laccase immobilization. The material was extensively characterized and successful immobilization of laccase via hydrophobic interaction was confirmed. The immobilization reached an enzyme loading density of 80 mg/g onto dPCN-224 and the laccase@dPCN-224 showed high activity recovery (90.0% vs. free laccase) and increased thermostability, pH tolerance, and organic co-solvent resistance over the free enzyme. Moreover, at various concentrations (0.5–20 mg/L), the BPA removal efficiencies of laccase@dPCN-224 were 3.3–5.0 times higher than those of free laccase due to the cooperative effect of adsorption and enzymatic degradation. The BPA bound on laccase@dPCN-224 could be almost completely biodegraded by adding 0.5 mM of electro-mediator (2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)). In addition, after five consecutive batch cycles, the BPA removal efficiency of laccase@dPCN-224 kept as high as 98.1% at 5 mg/L BPA. Taken together, the results proved the potential of laccase@dPCN-224 for applications in addressing environmental BPA pollutions.
