Intelligent analysis of carbendazim in agricultural products based on a ZSHPC/MWCNT/SPE portable nanosensor combined with machine learning methods

Xu Wang,Liang He,Lulu Xu,Zhongshou Liu,Yao Xiong,Weiqi Zhou,Hang Yao,Yangping Wen,Xiang Geng,Ruimei Wu

A nano-ZnS-decorated hierarchically porous carbon (ZSHPC) was mixed with MWCNTs to obtain ZSHPC/MWCNT nanocomposites. Then, ZSHPC/MWCNTs were used to modify a screen-printed electrode, and a portable electrochemical detection system combined with machine learning methods was used to investigate carbendazim (CBZ) residues in rice and tea. The electrochemical performance of the constructed electrode showed that the electrode had good electrocatalytic ability, large effective surface area, strong stability and anti-interference ability. Support Vector Machine (SVM), Least Square Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) and Back Propagation-Artificial Neural Network (BP-ANN) were used to establish the prediction model for CBZ residues in rice and tea, and the traditional linear regression was developed. The investigated results showed that the LS-SVM model had the best prediction performance and the lowest prediction error compared with the traditional linear regression, BP-ANN and SVM models. The R2, RMSE, and MAE for the training set samples were 0.9969, 0.3605 and 0.2968, respectively. The R2, RMSE, MAE and RPD for the prediction set samples were 0.9924, 0.6190, 0.5360 and 10.3097, respectively. The average recovery range of CBZ in tea and rice was 98.77–109.32% and that of RSD was 0.47–2.58%, indicating that the rapid analysis of CBZ pesticide residues in agricultural products based on a portable electrochemical detection system combined with machine learning was feasible.

Colorimetric determination of carbendazim based on the specific recognition of aptamer and the poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride aggregation of gold nanoparticles

Song Wang,Lantian Su,Lumei Wang,Dongwei Zhang,Guoqing Shen,Yun Ma

This paper proposes the idea of establishing carbendazim (CBZ) colorimetric determination in spiked water samples by specific aptamers of unlabeled carbendazim (CBZ), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and cationic polymer poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA). In the absence of CBZ, the CBZ aptamer will react with the cationic polymer PDDA by electrostatic interaction to form a complex structure. Therefore, the gold nanoparticles will remain dispersed due to the lack of PDDA. However, when CBZ is added into the sensory system, the CBZ-specific aptamer can selectively capture CBZ to form a stable complex structure. Due to the consumption of the aptamer, PDDA is unable to interact with the aptamer and begins to induce aggregation of AuNPs, thereby causing the color of the solution to change from red to blue. Colorimetric determination of CBZ based on the specific recognition of aptamer and the PDDA-induced aggregation of AuNPs has a detection limit of 2.2 nM, a linear range (R = 0.9960) from 2.2 to 500 nM. The method has good sensitivity and specificity, and the average recovery of CBZ is 94.9–104.8% in the application of actual water samples. This colorimetric method is simple, time-saving and low requirements for equipment, therefore, it holds great potential for CBZ detection in the environmental water samples.

A novel and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence assay for carbendazim based on N-doped carbon quantum dots and gold nanocluster nanohybrid

Yue Yang,Xinxin Xing,Tong Zou,Zidong Wang,Rongjun Zhao,Ping Hong,Sijia Peng,Xu Zhang,Yude Wang

A novel fluorescence “turn on” ratiometric fluorescent sensor was employed to determine carbendazim. The sensing process was achieved through the strong fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and gold nanocluster (AuNCs). The photoluminescence intensity of N-CQDs can be deactivated by AuNCs through FRET effect and recovered by the addition of carbendazim. The ratiometric detection of carbendazim is achieved by recording the photoluminescence and second-order Rayleigh scattering (SRS) signal of N-CQDs/AuNCs system. With the introduction of carbendazim to the sensing platform resulted in the photoluminescence and SRS signal of N-CQDS/AuNCs enhancing. UV–vis absorption, Zeta potential and fluorescence lifetime analyses indicate that the fluorescence turn on process can be attributed to the aggregation of AuNCs breaks the FRET process and increases SRS intensity. N-CQDs/AuNCs probe present a good sensitivity and selectivity for carbendazim detection, with two linear response ranges (1−100 μM, 150−1000 μM), low detection limit of 0.83 μM and 37.25 μM. Furthermore, real sample analyses indicate that the as-presented sensor has potentials in carbendazim determination in real sample analyses.

Color- and background-free Raman-encoded lateral flow immunoassay for simultaneous detection of carbendazim and imidacloprid in a single test line

Mengqi Wang,Jiayan Feng,Jiacheng Ding,Jinru Xiao,Dingbin Liu,Yang Lu,Yaqing Liu,Xia Gao

Multiple detection based on lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) holds significant research importance across various fields. Recently, the use of multi-color surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanotags has enabled simultaneous detection of multiple targets within a single test line (T-line) in LFA , greatly enhancing detection efficiency, reliability, and application flexibility. However, challenges regarding signal overlap in the Raman-fingerprint region (400–1800 cm −1 ) and the difficulty in determining specific targets based on typical color analysis have persisted. In this study, we developed two types of nanoprobes that encode both color and Raman information to address these challenges in simultaneous multiple detection on a single T-line in SERS-LFA. The nanoprobes were encoded with distinguishable blue and red colors, respectively, enabling colorimetric study in multiplex LFA for qualitative analysis. Additionally, they were encoded with distinctive and non-overlapping Raman signals in the Raman-silent region (1800–2800 cm −1 ), ensuring accurate and sensitive detection by effectively avoiding interference from each other as well as background signals in the sample matrix. Using carbendazim (CBZ) and imidacloprid (IMI) as model targets, the color- and Raman-encoded SERS-LFA demonstrated promising potential for the simultaneous detection of CBZ and IMI in both standard and real samples, whether in a colorimetric or a SERS mode.

Shuya Xue,Jiamin Zou,Jiapeng Li,Jingkun Xu,Hui Chen,Linyu Wang,Yansha Gao,Xuemin Duan,Limin Lu

Precisely detecting trace pesticides and their residues in food products is crucial for ensuring food safety. Herein, a high-performance electrochemical sensing platform was developed for the detection of carbendazim (CBZ) using Co,N co-doped hollow carbon nanocage@carbon nanotubes (Co,N-HC@CNTs) obtained from core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 combined with a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The Co,N-HC@CNTs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance, benefitting from the synergistic effect of CNTs that provide a large specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity , Co,N co-doped carbon nanocages that offer high electrocatalytic activity and hollow nanocage structures that ensure rapid diffusion kinetics. The conductive PEDOT-MIP provided specific binding sites for CBZ detection and significantly amplified the detection signal. The sensor showed superior selectivity for CBZ with an extremely low detection limit of 1.67 pmol L −1 . Moreover, the method was successfully applied to detect CBZ in tomato, orange and apple samples, achieving satisfactory recovery and accuracy, thus demonstrating its practical feasibility.

Ling Chen,Ming Li,Youhong Ai,Xueping Dang,Jianlin Huang,Huaixia Chen

This work describes, for the first time, an acryloyled β -cyclodextrin hybrid monolith column was synthesized, under aqueous-phase conditions, and used for solid-phase microextraction of carbendazim and carbaryl . The monolithic column was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and used as the adsorbent for solid phase microextraction (SPME) of carbendazim and carbaryl. After optimization of the SPME conditions, a simple and sensitive SPME-HPLC method was developed for the determination of carbendazim and carbaryl in leafy vegetables. The method exhibited a good liner response in the range 5–400 μg/kg (R 2  = 0.9994) for carbendazim and 10–400 μg/kg (R 2  = 0.9996) for carbaryl, respectively. The limits of detection were 1.0 and 1.5 μg/kg for carbendazim and carbaryl, respectively, in leafy vegetables. Recoveries ranged from 92.6% to 110.1%, and the relative standard deviations were less than 6.1%.

An electrochemical sensor modified with novel nanohybrid of Super-P carbon black@zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-8 for sensitive detection of carbendazim

Yunhang Liu,Tingting Wu,Hongyuan Zhao,Gan Zhu,Fang Li,Meimei Guo,Qiwen Ran,Sridhar Komarneni

A sensitive carbendazim (CBZ) electrochemical sensor was designed by using Super-P carbon (SPCN) black@zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-8 (SPCN@ZIF-8) nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (SPCN@ZIF-8/GCE). SPCN with pearl-chain nanostructure presented an integrated highly conductive carbon network, which significantly improved the charge transfer efficiency. ZIF-8 nanoparticles possessed high porosity and large specific surface area, which helped to realize the increasement of adsorption ability and accumulation capacity towards CBZ. Moreover, SPCN with excellent conductivity property not only inhibited the agglomeration of ZIF-8 nanoparticles but also compensated the non-conductive property of ZIF-8 nanoparticles. The functional integration of SPCN and ZIF-8 nanoparticles remarkably enhanced the electrochemical detection performance of the SPCN@ZIF-8/GCE sensor towards CBZ. A simple and sensitive CBZ detection could be achieved at the fabricated SPCN@ZIF-8/GCE sensor with low limit of detection of 7.79 nM (CBZ concentration: 0.01–30 μM). Moreover, the fabricated sensor showed good repeatability, reproducibility, and anti-interference performance. When used for the analysis of CBZ in real samples (tomato juice and apple juice), the SPCN@ZIF-8/GCE sensor showed good CBZ detection performance with acceptable recoveries of 99.1%–102.6% and low RSD values of 2.21%–3.27%. This work demonstrated that the SPCN@ZIF-8/GCE sensor may be a promising sensing platform for the rapid and sensitive detection of CBZ residue.

Combined effects of spent mushroom substrate and dicyandiamide on carbendazim dissipation in soils: Double-edged sword effects and potential risk controls

Andong Wang,Dongsheng Zou,Zhihong Xu,Bin Chen,Xiaopeng Zhang,Falin Chen,Manyun Zhang

Repeated and high-dose carbendazim applications have caused serious soil carbendazim contamination, and eco-friendly and economical approaches have been suggested to promote carbendazim removal in agricultural soil . Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a special recycled resource after harvesting mushrooms and can be utilized in contaminated soil amendment. The SMS application into agricultural soil might increase antibiotic resistance gene abundances, and the health risks of SMS application might be reduced with reasonable management to adjust the related electron transport of soil nitrification or denitrification. In this study, the SMS and nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide were used to remediate agricultural soil contaminated with the carbendazim, and the carbendazim contents, soil microbial biomass, activities and community and human disease genes were determined. Compared to the control treatment, the combined applications of SMS and dicyandiamide significantly decreased soil carbendazim content by 38.14% but significantly enhanced soil β -glucosidase, chitinase, arylsulfatase, urease and electron transfer system activities. The relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were increased by 11.0% and 8.2% with the SMS application, respectively. The carbendazim residues were negatively correlated with the soil pH, electron transfer system activities and relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. The relative abundances of human disease genes were also dramatically increased with the SMS application, but compared to the SMS alone, extra dicyandiamide application significantly reduced the relative abundances of human disease genes in soils. The SMS applications into fungicide-contaminated soils could generate double-edged sword effects of facilitating fungicide dissipation but leading to potential health risk increase, while applying the dicyandiamide with SMS might be an effective strategy to decrease the negative effect of health risk.

Sensitive electrochemical carbendazim detection in pesticides based on cross-linked γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework coupled with multi-atom co-doped graphene

Jingjing Jiang,Jiajia Wang,Peng Wang,Zenghui Huang,Yang Zang,Guowang Diao

In view of the fact that improper and excessive use of pesticides has posed severe threats to food quality, human health, ecological security, and aquatic ecosystems. A novel electrochemical sensing platform was fabricated with nitrogen, phosphorous, and boron ternary-doped reduced graphene oxide-supported cross-linked γ-CD-metal organic framework (NPB-rGO/CL-γ-CD-MOF) nanocomposites for the sensitive detection of carbendazim (CBZ). Choosing ethylenediamine, phytic acid, and boric acid as the N, P, and B source, the pre-synthesized NPB-rGO acted as the conductive substrate to further support CL-γ-CD-MOF from cross-linking γ-CD-MOF with diphenyl carbonate. The formed NPB-rGO/CL-γ-CD-MOF nanocomposites could accommodate numerous γ-CD molecules in CL-γ-CD-MOF for the specific capture of more CBZ via the host-guest interaction and activate the charge groups and spin densities of adjacent carbon atoms in NPB-rGO for the accelerative diffusion of CBZ towards the electrode surface. Such synergistic effect endowed the high sensitivity and selectivity for monitoring CBZ with the wide concentration range of 0.5–135 μM and low detection limit of 0.12 μΜ. Moreover, the designed electrochemical sensor was smoothly applied to detect CBZ in practical analyses with satisfactory results, which demonstrates that NPB-rGO/CL-γ-CD-MOF nanocomposites possess the bright prospect to become ideal electrode candidates in pesticide residue assays.

Yueru Ma,Yuqing Yang,Zhiwei Liu,Hongyu Shi,Zixin Jin,Ziwuzhen Wang,Wei Sheng

High-sensitive fluorescence biomimetic sensor for CBZ is developed. • Ni-MOF is combined with specific adsorption capacity of MIP. • Ni-MOF@MIP probe shows high specificity and sensing sensitivity for CBZ. • Adsorption capacity of Ni-MOF@MIP for CBZ has good stability. A novel fluorescence biomimetic sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of carbendazim (CBZ) in fruits, vegetables and grains is established. This sensor is assembled from nickel-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Here, Ni-MOF serves as the fluorescent signal source and carrier, and MIP is coated on the surface of Ni-MOF as a biomimetic recognition element for CBZ to prepare Ni-MOF@MIP probe. The fluorescence of Ni-MOF@MIP will be quenched after adding CBZ, and the fluorescence difference can be applied to realize the quantitative detection of CBZ. The sensor shows wide linear range of 0.01 to 5.00 × 10 3  μg/L ( R 2  = 0.996), and the detection limit (LOD) is 8.4 × 10 −3  μg/L (S/N = 3). The recovery of CBZ in spiked fruits, vegetables and grains has been confirmed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The fluorescent sensor provides a promising strategy for the detection of CBZ residue in fruit, vegetable and grain samples. Zheng Feng,Xue Yang,Xiaowei Guo,Jiamin Yu,Fan Li,Jimin Shao,Hui Liang,Hong Jiang

A sensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate based on SiO2@Ag core-shell with a QuEChERs pretreatment method were constructed for the determination of carbendazim residue in tobacco leaves. The SERS substrate was formed by self-assembly of monolayer homogeneous SiO2 nanospheres onto silicon wafer following by vacuum thermal evaporation of silver film. The QuEChERs pretreatment method was used to eliminate the interfering effects of pigments and organic acids in tobacco leaves. The results for carbendazim in tobacco leaves show the limit of detection (LOD) of the SERS substrate was 0.1 mg/kg and the recovery rate was from 82.56% to 95.93%. The proposed low-cost sensitive SERS substrates provide potential application for tobacco safety monitoring.

A novel electrochemical sensor based on β-cyclodextrin functionalized carbon nanosheets@carbon nanotubes for sensitive detection of bactericide carbendazim in apple juice

Runqiang Liu,Bo Li,Fang Li,Volodymyr Dubovyk,Yuqi Chang,Dongdong Li,Kunjie Ding,Qiwen Ran,Guifang Wang,Hongyuan Zhao

Carbendazim (CBZ) abuse always causes the over-standard of pesticide residues in agricultural products, which has adverse effects on human health. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensor was firstly fabricated based on the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized carbon nanosheets@carbon nanotubes (CNS@CNT) for the CBZ determination. CNS@CNT combined large surface area of CNS and excellent electrical conductivity of CNT, which significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, β-CD possessed excellent host-gest supramolecular recognition ability, which could improve the selective recognition and enrichment capability of CBZ. Thanks to the synergistic interaction of CNS@CNT and β-CD, the β-CD/CNS@CNT/GCE sensor exhibited a low limit of detection of 9.4 nM in the linear CBZ concentration range of 0.03–30 μM. The fabricated sensor presented favorable stability, high sensitivity (30.86 μA μM −1 cm −2 ), and reliable reproducibility (RSD = 3.6%). Especially, the β-CD/CNS@CNT/GCE sensor could show pretty practical feasibility for the detection of CBZ in apple juice with recoveries of 97.1%-99.4%.
